FARMERS BRANCH, Texas
Clutching American flags and signs that read “America was formed by immigrants,” more than 300 protesters on Saturday denounced a city proposal that would prohibit landlords from leasing to illegal immigrants.
About two dozen counter-protesters staged a demonstration nearby.
The proposal by City Councilman Tim O’Hare would also make it tougher for illegal immigrants to work in the Dallas suburb, penalize businesses that employ undocumented workers and make English the city’s official language.
Protesters branded the proposal a racist initiative that would single out Hispanics, who make up about 37 percent of the city’s population, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures from 2000.
“If we’re of a certain color, they’re going to point their finger at us,” said Jose Gomez, a 42-year-old naturalized citizen.
Organizers of the rally emphasized that immigrants, regardless of status, pay taxes when they shop, rent or buy a home in Farmers Branch.
Families with children and college students rallied in temperatures topping 100 degrees.
O’Hare, who was not seen at the rally, and a city spokesman did not immediately return calls to The Associated Press.
Counter-protesters carried signs reading “I place all persons in the USA illegally under citizen’s arrest” and “Como se Dice illegal en Espanol?”, which translates to “How do you say illegal in Spanish?”
Supporters of the proposal said the measure would address problems with health care, education and crime in the city.
“They’re taking our jobs, our homes,” said Debbie Rawlins, 48. “There’s unemployment partly because of the Hispanics. The lady that took my job is Hispanic and she’s bilingual.”
City Council members heard from constituents earlier this week on whether Farmers Branch should approve the measures, but no decision was made.

There’s a rumor that my landlord will be evicting everyone from our building – 9 apartments in all – in order to turn it into office space. Without a lease, how much notice do they have to give the tenants? Located in Upstate NY, not NYC.
I asked her straight-up if they were going to be going forward with the plan but she just denied it, meanwhile there were contracters in each apartment inspecting for asbestos and taking measurements so…

With no lease, the conversation is over.
You have no contract with the landlord. She can terminate the relationship at the end of any paid month.
Going forward, get it in writing.

I run a dry cleaners and which has a decent amount of equipment to move, and not to mention, the possibilty of all that dust getting on the clean clothes. Do landlords, compensate the tenant in anyway? Can the tenant demand to not pay any rent during the construction? Can the tenant really do anything?

Read your lease. A well written contract will have all this spelled out. If it isn’t sddressed, then you can either refuse to let him do “cosmetic repairs” but not necessary maintenance. If you are put out then you MAY be entitled to some $ for your lost time.

There is no government offering of $ 3000 for people to move out of their soon-to-be foreclosed homes. You are referring to a ‘cash for keys’ offer, which comes from the lender itself. The money is sometimes offered to insure that the premises are empty and in good condition on the actual date of foreclosure.

My husband’s 2007 Mazda 3 has been knocking. He had to drive it home and then to the dealership on Monday (9/29). The car is still in the shop. We’ve provided all the maintenance receipts as of Friday. Dealership called my husband today saying they needed his OK to open it up and if they see that it wasn’t properly lubricated they will charge him for the whole deal. The car is still under warranty, they have the proof of maintenance. Is this guy just being a jerk? Or have other people experienced something similar? This smells like a lawsuit!
Engine started knocking on Sat 9/27. Dealership is closed on wknds. Delivered to dealership at 9am Monday 9/30.
We only drove it to the dealer. No one is arguing negligence. It’s been properly maintained on schedule. They STILL don’t want to do the work.
btw, it’s $ 8,000 for a new engine.

The first question I would ask, as a mechanic, is how long has it been knocking? If it’s been more than 2 days it’s your responsibility. Any one who has a vehicle should be able to check the oil. By letting it go too long it voids the warranty due to your negligence.

My car burned up in my drive way 2 weeks ago and i didn’t have insurance on my car(couldn’t afford it). I hardly drove it because of that reason. There was minor damage to the garage door. My question is am I responsible for damage because I don’t have insurance. And also I had a guy check out the damage and gave me a quote to fix it, but my landlord went with the higher cost and wants me to pay for it. any advice would be helpful
I know I am mainly responsible for the damage. Plus I didn’t know something was wrong with car, and I was going to fix the damage but he got some handyman to fix for a higher price than what I got quoted.

Being it was your car and you didn’t have insurance you are legally responsible for it. If you had insurance on the car your insurance company would pay for it.
Also, being it was your car in the driveway and nothing of the landlords it’s not likely that the landlord’s insurance company would pay for it.

When I got married my father in law co-signed for a house for my wife and I because she was 20 and didn’t have any credit and I had just come from the UK and hadn’t even got my SSN yet. Now 6 years later with us paying the mortgage and homeowners payments for the whole time we are looking to refinance to pull some money out to update the kitchen and bathrooms and he says he wants us to “buy him out” for $ 20,000 from the equity of the home. (We bought it for $ 69,000 and its now appraising around $ 120,000) We have paid around $ 40,000 in payments on the house over the 6 years and I feel like he is being greedy trying to profit on his kids. I don’t know how to approach the subject with him and my wife doesn’t want a rift with her parents over money. Her father is quite well off as a financial planner and makes probably $ 100k a year and her mom works too. Her father co-signed for her brother also but his house is in georgia and is worth less than what the paid for it so they don’t have to pay squat if they sell it. I need some advice on what to do about this. Its a very delicate situation and I need to approach it correctly.

Well, if he has never paid any of the payments – you shouldn’t have to ‘buy him out’. He himself has no equity in your home. He did not personally loan you money so you do not owe him anything. The bank required a co-signer just as someone to pay up if you did not pay the mortgage.
BTW – it is a really, really bad idea to borrow of the equity of your home. May I make a recommendation? Check out daveramsey.com
