So I’m looking into 1/2 ton trucks for my property management business. Basically, I mow grass in the spring, summer, and fall, and push some snow in the winter. In all truth, a mid-size pickup like a Dakota, Ranger, or Tacoma could do the job of pulling my trailer and mowers. I’m stepping up to a 1/2 ton for the snow plowing bit. The problem is, snow plowing is maybe 10% of my business, it only snows a few times a year, sometimes not even that. If I lived in Boston or Milwaukee I’d consider buying a 3/4 ton or 1 ton for the plowing, but it would be overkill for the amount I need my truck to plow. Well the manufacturers are telling me conflicting things. One says putting a plow on a truck makes the warranty null and void. Another tells me, if something in the powertrain happens while plowing, its void. I’ve heard that it depends if you use the factory plow prep or a 3rd party prep, etc. etc. I’m worried a salesman is trying to play both sides of the line, “it only affects it while the plow is on it” on the lot, “well you had a plow hooked up this past winter, that voids the warranty” when I bring it in for service. Does anyone know a definitive answer to this for any of the three manufacturers I listed? I’m looking at a F-150, Ram 1500, and Tundra.

When it comes to trucks bigger is always better…Especially when pushing snow…Sure you can get away with a half ton but you have to remember that the resale is always better for the 3/4 and up versus the 1/2 ton…I plow snow for the state of calif and all our international trucks have plows and the warrantys are good…I think that the salesmen are playing both of the fields…Of course they want you to use the plows they sell…They want to make money off of you and as much as possible…I look at it like lift kits….Sure they say they will void the warranty if you put the lift on yourself but if they do it for you it,s o.k….So you buy a truck,you buy a plow,you tell the dealer to install it,They are gonna say no it,s gonna void your warranty?I don,t think so…

There really are no cheap ones. U-Haul would be your best bet, but even they will be about $ 500-1000 once you factor in mileage and gas.
I just moved across the country myself and I sold all my furniture, shipped a few boxes of clothes FedEx and put my tv & comp in my car and drove my car. If you don’t want to spend so much on a moving truck or don’t have the funds available, you’ll have to downsize, sell off your stuff like I did. Take that $ 1000 you would have spent on the truck to buy new things. But I had cheapy furniture, obviously if you have $ 10,000 worth of nice furniture it will be worth it to keep.

The day after thanksgiving 09 about 2am (no alcohol involved) I got into a car accident with a tree in the rain about a mile from my house. After making sure everyone was ok I attempted to see if my truck was drivable all the way home which it wasn’t so i parked it in a strip mall until the next morning when I could get it towed by my insurance company. The tree didn’t belong to anyone so there was no need to call the police since the only damage was to my truck. My friends and I walked to my house and the next morning when I went back it was gone. I called the police and they said it was towed under evidence of hit and run. later I found out someone called it in because they said they didn’t know if I hit a tree or street sign ( there were no street signs knocked over so it should have been easy). The police held my truck in impound for 42 days for a total of $ 1849 because the officer who took the report that night wouldn’t turn it in for some reason. The only way I finally got some action taken was to go to the officers police station and threaten to bother the chief everyday until someone had some answers. I tried filing a claim but they said the police had a right to tow my vehicle if they thought it was involved in a hit and run. Does this make sense to anyone when the only damage was to my truck from hitting a lone tree so where is the hit and run???. I want to sue but a lawyer would cost more then the money I paid to get it out. Does anyone know another route or have some advice for me?

Yes, they had the right to tow your vehicle. You did damage the tree, which has to be someone’s property (nothing “doesn’t belong to anyone”), so that qualifies as hit-and-run even if there was no other damage. I agree that 42 days is a bit extreme, but I don’t know what the rules are on that.

You should have called your insurance company right away and made arrangements. There are 24 hour towing companies. If that’s not possible, they can call the police and alert them of the situation so that they don’t tow it.
