Question : Stadium lights in a residential section?
I moved to the suburbs about five years to get away from the noise and light pollution of the city. For the first three years, it was really nice. Unfortunately, the local school district saw fit to build a huge multi-million dollar sports stadium right in the middle of the adjacent residential section last year. It baffles me how any taxpayer-funded agency can do that to its citizen. I can hear almost everything going on and it lights up my house like a Broadway stage, sometimes until 11:30pm. The town has a dark skies ordinance and noise restrictions, but apparently they don’t apply to an entity like a school district. The district claims the lights are shielded and pointed down correctly, plus cannot be dimmed. What are my legal options here? Not only does it disturb my quality of living, I’m sure it reduces the value of my five year old house. It’s like living in an industrial section of town. Advice appreciated and best answer will be chosen. Thanks!
Actually I am very involved in the community and try to attend a few council meetings a year. I knew there were discussions of a new stadium, but the possibility of building it right in the middle of a residential section never occured to me. I assumed the planning and zoning board could prevent something that nutty. Shortly, after I moved here, there was a sign on that property that said “future site of ____ ISD”, but nothing about a stadium. Is there an electronic means to measure illumination difference in the neighborhood between lights on and off? Maybe that would prove there’s an excessive disruption? I know we can’t remove the stadium, but I need some way to at least minimize the excessive glare. I tell you, I feel really stomped on here, even as I continue to pay taxes to these guys.

I am not sure that you have any legal options beyond imposing a curfew for the lights operations( in most cases 11 oclock).

Jets, Giants want new home to host 2014 Super Bowl

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—The Giants and Jets want to bring the Super Bowl to their new stadium in New Jersey in 2014.

After receiving approval from a league committee to bid on an NFL title game, the teams announced on Thursday that they will submit a proposal to host what would be a cold weather title game in four years.

The new 82,500-seat stadium is scheduled to open next year.

The NFL owners’ Super Bowl Advisory Committee allowed the bid despite the traditional requirement that host regions have a minimum temperature of 50 degrees or indoor stadiums.

The advisory committee gave approval with the understanding that the bid represents a unique, once-only circumstance to celebrate the new stadium and the great heritage of the NFL in the New York region.

The New Meadowlands Stadium Company, which is building the new stadium, has to submit a preliminary proposal to the NFL by April 1. The winning bid will be announced at the end of May.

“It’s time for the biggest game in football to be played on the biggest stage in the world,” Jets owner Woody Johnson and Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch said in a joint statement as chairmen of the bid committee. “We are confident that the appeal and prestige of the New York City metropolitan region, coupled with the innovative capabilities of our brand-new state-of-the-art facility, can provide a unique and exciting experience for the teams and fans, as well as the entire league and the sport of football.

“And, of course, we would love to bring the Super Bowl and its significant economic benefits to New York and northern New Jersey,” they added.

A New York/New Jersey Super Bowl would generate hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity, and serve as a major boost for the area, creating hundreds of jobs related to staging the game, the teams said.
