R&P: Let’s decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 3)?

Question : R&P: Let’s decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 3)?
Welcome, to the next installment of the First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition). You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.
I do ask that you listen to all of the songs… don’t vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups.

Please star this early and often, e-mail your friends and let them know this is happening. E-mail strangers and enemies too, if you think they might be interested. I want to get as many votes as we can… make this a true R&P event. Let me know if you have trouble with the last.fm or youtube links and I’ll get on them ASAP.

MATCH UP 1
“Stone Cold Metal” – Ensiferum

Finnish heavy metal, whose name translates to “sword bearer.” Epic, sweeping pictures are painted of heroic deeds, ancient in nature, sometimes related to the Norse gods.
VERSUS
“Dark Horse” – Converge

math metal in the vein of Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan and the like. This album has had praise heaped up upon it. The technical proficiency and progressive tendencies are impressive, but can a Massachusettes metal band possibly beat the ice giants of Norway?

MATCH UP 2
“Two Weeks” – Grizzly Bear

creepy video aside, “Two Weeks” is Veckatimest’s most immediate song. Lush arrangements and harmonies, a beautiful melody.
VERSUS
“Coast of Carolina” – Telekinesis

Seattle nostalgic indie rock.

MATCH UP 3
“My Girls” – Animal Collective

Votes seemed to be split between Summertime Clothes and My Girls — had people clearly loved one more than the other, the winner would have been the top seed in this competition, by far. My Girls is catchy, with a harmony that hearkens back to Brian Wilson. Drawing from world music, the Beach Boys, and electronica equally, and yet making a beautiful, cohesive whole with possible crossover appeal is an impressive feat.
VERSUS
“When They Fight, They Fight” – Generationals

There’s an interesting 50′-60s pop group vibe to this, and the throwback production quality only underlines that feeling. Indie pop with sugar on top.

MATCH UP 4
“The Fear” – Lily Allen

Does anyone think this might actually be the last we hear of Lily Allen? There was “retirement” talk when her last album came out.
VERSUS
“The Strangers” – St. Vincent

a disintegrating relationship, pulling our heroine down with it. And an experiment in textures detailing her fight below the surface.

MATCH UP 5
“Peeled Apples” – Manic Street Preachers

The words are that of their long dead front man…
VERSUS
“Dive” – B’z

One of the hardest Drummania songs, Model FT2 Miracle Version (Drummania Extreme Drums – D Ranking)

home warranty rating

So yeah, this is an atrocious run of the song, but honestly, my best run isn’t much better than this at all. This song is beyond ridiculously hard, and while I haven’t practiced it that much, I will never, ever FC this song, probably never S it either, no matter how much I practice it. The insane part? People have SS’ed this, like this guy: www.youtube.com I mainly put this up just so people could see how insanely difficult the charts get on Drummania (this is on the arcade version), and this is rated a 95 from 1-99 on the difficulty scale, so yes, there are harder songs than this. :X No foot or combo meter because my foot cam battery died out before I made this, and I don’t really combo much besides the intro and one part in the middle, so yeah. BTW, thanks for all the concern with the earlier incident, nice to know so many of you were going out of your way to try and notify me :) My stick goes in front of the camera, but if you think about it for a minute, there’s literally nowhere else I could place the camera and still get a nearly flat view of the screen. Fraps, Camstudio, Camtasia, Playclaw, and every other screen recording program causes DTXMania to lag heavily, that’s why I don’t use them. DTXMania eats up a ton of processor speed, so using anything else while i’m playing it drops the FPS down to around 5. Thedrumset i’m using is a “GoodWoods” set, a sturdy, quiet, responsive set with great rebound: you can get it at www.goodwoodmods.com I’m using the “Destroyer

Look for songs by The Andrew Sisters or big band music from Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller or Benny Goodman. Don’t forget Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra.

Question : R&P: Let’s decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 15)?
The First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition).
Part 15 of the first round. More to come, and you don’t have to have voted in previous parts to get started here.
Guest Commentary by R&P’s own David.

MATCH UP 1
Phoenix – “Lisztomania”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJDNw7o6so

Though active since the late 1990s, French alternative band Phoenix did not become international superstars until 2009. This colorful, energetic single helped them achieve the feat. It shares its title with a 1975 musical starring Roger Daltrey as Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (and, of course, featuring Ringo Starr as the Pope).
VERSUS
Wilco – “Bull Black Nova”

“Would you be interested in going to a Wilco concert with me?”
“Definitely! I love Wilco”
“So I guess we WILCO to the show together!”
“…not anymore”
Boisterous French synth pop not for you? Perhaps this sinister song from Chicago’s enduring and influential Wilco is. Found on their well-received self-titled album, the song’s lyrics are told from the perspective of a man who has murdered his significant other.

MATCH UP 2
Kid Cudi – “Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)” [feat. MGMT and Ratatat]

Kanye West’s quirky, stylish protégé collaborates with indie dance duos MGMT and Ratatat on this song from his debut album. Cudi has been praised by critics as representing “a promising new phase in the genre’s evolution.” (Entertainment Weekly)
VERSUS
Mos Def – “Life in Marvelous Times”

The lead single from The Ecstatic, celebrated by critics and fans as a return to form for the hip hop icon and actor after the disappointing sales and poor reviews which befell his last album. The rousing song is a survey of his life and career and society at large.

MATCH UP 3
Porcupine Tree – “I Drive the Hearse”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj2pWB2S_Jk

The fourteenth and final part of a 55-minute song cycle by the English progressive metal band, the aim of which is to “humanize the detached media reportage” (Steven Wilson) of violent crimes and disasters.
VERSUS
Wavves – “So Bored”

Hailed as the catchiest cut from the lo-fi/noise pop/surf band’s sophmore album. Lead singer Nathan Williams made headlines when he, high on ecstasy and Valium, fought his drummer and crudely insulted the crowd at the Barcelona Primavera Sound Festival. Their European tour was subsequently canceled.

MATCH UP 4
Backstreet Boys – “Shattered”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YI_DVkCysFA

The penultimate song from the teen pop sensations-turned-adult contemporary stalwarts’ most recent album, This Is Us.
VERSUS
Diddy & Dirty Money – “Love Come Down”

His own music has never seemed to be the entrepreneur and fashion designer’s top priority. This single’s failure to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 perhaps suggests he should try harder.

MATCH UP 5
Three Days Grace – “Break”

Blame Canada. The lead single from the Canadian band’s third album. Bassist Brad Walst explained the song’s theme is “breaking away from bad influences.” In case you couldn’t tell from the mega-earnest, angsty chorus.
VERSUS
Thousand Foot Krutch – “Fire It Up”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOJee120Po8

Blame Canada, again. Here’s a mouthful: Canadian Christian nü-metal. This is the third single from their fifth album, Welcome to the Masquerade. As featured in the trailer for one of the year’s worst films, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Question : R&P: Let’s decide — What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 – Part 6)?
The never-ending battle continues.
Today we have a new guest contributor. You may know him as David, you may know him as paperbag, but he’s bee a regular here for quite a while (longer than I), and he was nice enough to write up some match-ups while I deal with cross-country flights. The First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition) continues.

MARQUEE MATCHUP
“Last of the English Roses” – Peter Doherty

The lead single from the celebrated and controversial indie icon’s debut solo album. Produced by Stephen Street (The Smiths), this atmospheric, elegant song features Blur’s Graham Coxon on guitar. Picture a lost love from your past as you listen.
VS.
“Moving Clocks Run Slow” – We Were Promised Jetpacks

Hailed by critics for their “youthful brio and subtlety” (Mojo) and “dreamy and impressionistic” lyrics (The A.V. Club), this Scottish band cites The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbits as influences. Listen to this song from their debut album and see if you feel the praise is deserved.

MATCH UP 2:
“Antenna” – Sonic Youth

A song from The Eternal, Sonic Youth’s sixteenth album. Always pushing the musical envelope, and therefore always polarizing, the band describe this song as a “melodious ode to fleeting fantasy and unresolved desire with the sound of two analogue radios communicating the emotional action.” Are you on their unique wavelength or eager to tune out?
VS.
“The Fixer” – Pearl Jam

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_d6Km3QJFc

A lighter-than-usual single from the Seattle icons. Are they… having a good time?! It’s certainly no “World Wide Suicide.” A few critics have blasted PJ for this bouncier, more pop-oriented sound, damning it as forced and ill-fitting. Do you concur or are you too busy nodding your head and singing along with poppier Vedder?

MATCH UP 3:
“My Wife’s Home Town” – Bob Dylan

http://www.lala.com/#search/bob%20dylan%20my%20wife%27s%20home%20town

The legendary singer/songwriter is pushing 70 and still kicking. It’s been said his voice (always an acquired taste) is shot and he should retire; others insist he’s as brilliant and relevant as ever. Listen to this cut from Together Through Life and decide for yourself.
(editor’s note: no youtube link, sorry guys).
VS.
“Wretched World” – Converge

If elderly Dylan isn’t to your taste, perhaps a metalcore band from Salem, Massachusetts will be. This song features contributions from Genghis Tron and is included on their most recent album, Axe to Fall.

MATCH UP 4:
“New Divide” – Linkin Park

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysSxxIqKNN0

A song by one of the decade’s most successful American bands for 2009′s most popular (and most plot-free) film–this is without a doubt music as big business. Empty bombast? Or a rousing anthem? You decide. And decide quick, before Michael Bay and Megatron blow Yahoo! Answers to smithereens!
VS.
“Savior” – Rise Against

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qhry7ufxno

Vocalist Tim McIlrath and his band of melodious hardcore men hail from Chicago. This is one of their most successful singles to date. Oh, the angst! The sorrow! Do you feel their pain? Or will you vote against Rise Against?

MATCH UP 5:
“Baby By Me” – 50 Cent

G-Unit! The movie! The video games! You would be forgiven if you had forgotten 50 Cent’s career as a recording artist. Sales for Before I Self Destruct, his fourth album, were disappointing. Listen to this song, which features Ne-Yo, and decide if people are missing out by missing Curtis’ newer music.
VS.
“Love Me” – Justin Bieber

Get perfect hair or die tryin’. See the 15-year-old lothario steal from The Cardigans and woo tween girls from coast to coast! Does this simple, sweet pop song leave you smiling or does Justin have your stomach turning?

You, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.
