But the hardest part of the nearly 2,700-mile journey will be the end. Their final destination is where starting their lives over begins.

Feeling like prisoners

Luis and Marlen, both 33, lived in Arizona for more than 15 years. They are from the same small town, Xaltianguis, in southern Mexico, but they met while living at the same West Valley apartment complex.

Luis was 17 when he crossed the border illegally near Douglas. Marlen was 16 when she jumped a fence near Nogales. Both came looking for work.

Their three children are U.S. citizens because they were born in Arizona. The oldest, Luis Jr., is a quiet 13-year-old. Vanessa, 10, wears glasses and loves to talk. The baby, Christian, is 2.

Lawyers have told Luis and Marlen that they do not qualify for legal residency.

Luis has washed dishes at a restaurant on Grand Avenue, at a retirement home in Peoria and at a restaurant in Sun City West. For the past four years, he worked as a landscaper for a company that maintains office buildings in the West Valley. He earned $ 9.80 an hour. Marlen is a stay-at-home mom.

Luis and Marlen picked Pennsylvania. They have relatives there who say there is plenty of work.

Maybe if the went home, and immigrated here legally… their nerves would be in better shape.

Question : Can my company sue me for relocation costs if I leave?
When I started with my company 18 months ago, they added language in the offer letter that said I would pay back all relocation costs (approx. $ 18k) if I left before July 2008. I may have signed it, but I’m not sure, but it was in the offer letter that I accepted. This place is dying and I want to get out of here. Can they actually sue me for this money if I leave whether I signed or not?

If you signed it, or accepted the offer outlined in the letter, then you have agreed to a contractual and binding agreement. So, yes, they can most definitely make you repay the money.

Everyone, I am going through a really difficult time accepting a break-up. My boyfriend ended things almost 2 weeks ago and I’m totally struggling. For background on what I’ve been going through, please check out this “question” that I posted a month ago:

So, if you’ve read from that link above, my boyfriend’s tactics of barely calling me continued. Even when I would call him, he would return my call one even two days later. It seemed as if after the miscarriage, he totally cut me out of his life.

When he got back to Boston (I live in Miami), I barely heard from him. We went from texting and calling about EVERY little thing, every single day to me not hearing from him? My miscarriage began 5 days after the doctor’s appointment and I will spare you all with the details of that horrible experience. I have never been in so much physical and emotional pain in my life. Though he’s in Boston, shouldn’t have called me EVERY DAY to see how I am? In the 5 days since he’d been back in Boston, I only heard from him twice. When I told him about the pain I was in and that the miscarriage had begun, he responded “Oh, I’m so sorry!” It was as if I was a burden to him. We never even discussed the miscarriage together.

In conclusion, over the next month, I barely heard from him. I was trying to give him “space” thinking he was trying to adjust to a new job but he never gave a DAMN about me! I cried for him when he lost his job but he never cried for me! I loved and needed him! Even if he didn’t want the baby, I unfortunately had a miscarriage… Shouldn’t he be “relieved” (for lack of a better word) that the pregnancy is no more? Does he blame me for getting pregnant? Why do I feel so guilty?

He would go days and days without contacting me so 2 weeks ago I called to discuss the bills from the miscarriage that he said he’d pay. I asked him, “Baby, what’s wrong? Something is up.” and he said “I’ve been meaning to talk to you. I just can’t do this. The distance and everything, and well, I’m not ready to take that next step and have you move here.” I was crushed. I saw this coming but still I was crushed. In one month, I lose him and my baby. OUR baby. I went in circles with him. I told him that I didn’t need to move to Boston now or even this year! We could stay in the relationship and see where things go! One month prior he wanted to marry me and now he didn’t feel committed to take that next step and have me move there? I wasn’t asking for marriage, I was only asking for him! I even told him that I’d move there, get my own place and that way he wouldn’t feel “responsible” for my well-being if things went bad. He didn’t even want that. I couldn’t believe what was happening. He didn’t even have the nerve to tell me this face-to-face after ALL we’d been through. How could he leave me in my most desperate time of need???

I felt myself starting to cry but I stayed strong. I raised my voice and told him that he wasn’t making sense. How can you say you couldn’t see yourself without me and all of a sudden “Poof! I don’t want you anymore?!!” I wished him luck and hung up the phone in anger. The bad part is, I wish I hadn’t done that. I wanted to call him back and tell him one thing: I’d never gotten a chance to tell him how he made me feel like a dog in that doctor’s office. I don’t know if I’ll ever get that chance.

Where do I go from here? What do you guys think is his problem? I didn’t get pregnant on purpose. Where did I go wrong? Not only and I trying to grapple with the loss of my baby, but now I’m having to go through the misery of losing this great man that I loved too? That’s not right!!! I don’t know what to do.

Do you think if I lived there or if he lived in my city this would have happened? Is he using the distance as a cop-out? I need closure and even though it’s been 2 weeks, I’m afraid I’ll never talk to him again! Do you think I should fly there and ask to see him face-to-face? Someone please shed insight. I’m about to lose my mind. What should I do? I need to tell him how he made me feel! I’m so angry right now and feel as if I can’t carry on. Please help me someone.
Thanks, Betty! I am seeing a counselor and I have been trying to work through this. I saw this coming so I was not in denial. I just can’t believe that he could flip his tune in one month’s time. I want to know why but I realize that I may never get an answer. I just want some sort of closure.

Unfortunately, I think he is demonstrating how he feels about you and the relationship. He may be using the distance thing as a copout, but it would probably have happened if you lived closer together. What you’re going through it really tough – to lose a man and a baby at the same time. I would recommend some counseling. .

Last month, my colleague found out that her landlord has not been paying the mortgage and the bank is now foreclosing on the property. The bank hired an exit realty company to give my colleague a check in exchange for her to leave. My colleague will not be able to get back her last month and security deposit from the landlord since the landlord is bankrupt. The exit realty company told my colleague that the mortgage company will give her a check of $ 4000 if she moves within a week, but the check would be provided only when all the possessions are out of the house. The agent said my colleague has to sign a contract to get the money. My colleague asked for a copy of the contract, the agent said no, that my colleague has to sign a contract first and W-9 form (request for taxpayer identification number and certification), and then he would give a letter from the mortgage company within a week. My colleague signed a contract, but the agent left name of the bank blank and also there was no line at the bottom of the form for any other signature other than mine.
The paper that my colleague had to sign is called an “Agreement to Vacate Premises”. The agreement starts off with: “This agreement to vacate premises (“Agreement”) is made this ___ day of _______, 2004, by and between ________, hereinafter referred to as “Owner”, and ______, hereinafter referred to as (“Occupant(s)”.

At the end of the agreement, there is space for signature only for Occupant. There is no signature line for Owner.

The exit realty agent had my colleague sign the agreement. When my colleague pointed out that the wrong year of 2004 was typed on there, the realty agent crossed off the year and wrote “2008″ over it.

Also, the exit realty agent left the blank for “Owner” empty because he claimed that the bank does not want to deal directly with the occupants and that is why the bank hired this realty company. The agent refused to provide the name of the bank.

What should my colleague do at this point?
According to agreement, my colleague has to move out of the apartment by November 6 (two days). The premises have to be in “broom clean condition” for my colleague to get a check. All possessions must be moved out of the apartment.

Now, the agent is saying that there might a chance the check won’t be available on November 6.

Was this just a scam on the bank or realty agent’s part to get my colleague to move out? She has packed all her belongings in boxes and she put down a deposit and first month rent on a new apartment, but she did all that with the understanding this money was coming through.

I read through the agreement and it appears one-sided because I don’t believe it is a contract because only the occupant has signed it. The bank’s name is missing and neither the agent or the bank has signed the agreement.
My colleague will lose approximately $ 5000 — a combination of the rent that she already paid in November to the landlord, her security deposit, and her last month’s rent. People reading this question may think that $ 4000 is a generous offer, but she hasn’t received anything with another party’s signature. The realty agent said he will give my colleague the agreement with the signature after she gives him the keys to the apartment and after he deems the place to be vacated and cleaned. I know that is hard. One of my friends got an eviction notice even though she has been paying her rent but the landlord wasn’t paying the mortgage. Your friend has no choice but to go. The contract (lease) that she had to live in that apartment was with whomever owned it before but since they are no longer the owner of the property the contract is no longer valid. I am very sorry for her situation.

We signed a contract in early April and are supposed to close within the next week. The Realtor has not yet changed the status of the yard sign. My husband seems to think there is a law against leaving the For Sale sign up, but I can’t find anything about it online. Thanks!
