Mail Order Home Kits – Sear Roebuck Homes Still Stand Proud
0“After careful consideration, I think I will choose the modern home No. 146. The Saratoga has a beautiful large terrace and the redwood siding should last for many decades.”
It was perhaps the thought of thousands of families who bought their home in the Homes from Sears Roebuck catalog in the mail – delivered a phenomenon of the early 20th Century kit homes in the car with the families through the stacked America. Read Between 1908 and 1940, approximately 100,000 families in the catalog architecture, check out short form of house styles and analyze floor plans. Then, depending on your budget and needs family, put a stamp on an envelope and sent for a complete kit to build their house from foundation to roof.
Sometimes the buyer the task of building the house, while others have engaged local contractors. Thousands of these houses still stand, their owners can not be on their bungalow, cottage, farm or other old house assembled from a kit. The cost? A home kit can be purchased for under, and up to about 000, 700, depending on design and square footage. Today, many of these houses sell for half a million dollars or more.
While Sears Roebuck Company was the most successful retailer of home kits that he was not alone. A major competitor has been brought into the market, not surprisingly, Montgomery Ward. But it was Sears, which covers the majority of purchases, and left a lasting mark on the property across America. Some analysts say it was the company attention to detail and quality it held before its competitors. In 1918, the promised sale of a piece of Sears’ the customer for a lifetime of every house we sell is satisfied an advertisement for Sears Roebuck and Company is permanent “.
Part of this satisfaction came with the effective Sears kits were compiled and presented. In the early 1900s, carpenters and builders the advantage of power tools today. Most people were not trained in reading blueprints or experience in construction. Sears pre-cut all the wood for houses and follow the instructions. Since most buyers were closely involved in the construction of their home strip, there was a special pride in the hand on the property.
After the Depression, Sears a more comprehensive offering for clients such as financing. Until then, the company was deeply in sawmills and other industries that support their risk housing. In 1940, the burden of production and financing – and the impact of the Second World War – the last book of modern houses was seen. Times have changed and Sear Roebuck changed with them. The company has never been an inventory of houses so many people, the houses in the first decades of the 20th Century may not be aware of your own, carried out their modest home is sold, at home mail order.

My does (rabbits) are moving newborn kits out of wire cages. Why?
0Question : My does (rabbits) are moving newborn kits out of wire cages. Why?
OK, so here is my situation. One day, I go out to our rabbitry (we raise mostly New Zealands, we have four does and one buck), and there’s a 3-4 day old kit on the ground. We keep the rabbits in hanging wire cages, 1″x2″ mesh, with 1/2″x1″ floors. The doors are quite secure, and there’s no sign that a person was in the barn (after all, who would be so careless as to drop a kit, but careful enough to wire the doors shut and replace the water bottles??) One doe (Future) delivered 3-4 days ago, the other (Granny) delivered maybe 2 days ago. He was alive, but cool, so I warmed him up and replaced him. I also found three more kits, two alive (they were also warmed and replaced) and one dead. What’s up??? This has never happened before!! The doe who delivered 3-4 days ago is a top-notch dam (two of the live kits were from her), so I’m surprised. The next day, two more of Future’s kits were outside the cage, on the floor. Also, another one of our does (Past) delivered, and while she is improving, she doesn’t have the best track record as a dam. This time was an enormous step back for her. She had two kits on the wire (one was still alive, so I surried it out to another doe), several in the box, and had made no nest. I surried out all her kits. When she finally did make a nest, several hours later, I gave her back three of her kits (the other dams were over-loaded anyway, so I don’t really think I hurt their chances of survival at all). That was yester-day. About when I did that, we found a dead kit (one of Past’s) outside the cages. Don’t know how it got there. We figured maybe an animal was pestering them and causing them to be anxious, so we slept the dog in the barn last night (he doesn’t bother any of the commercial rabbits). To-day there was one (of Future’s) kits on the floor late this morning, which I replaced. Head counts were otherwise good all around and I didn’t see any dead kits, though I didn’t mess with Past, since she is still pretty worked up. I did, however, see movement in her nest box.
The style of cages have been in use for some time and we’ve never had problems with security. I looked these over quite well and see no damage; they are fairly new. My biggest concern is what on earth is causing her to do this? Is she really squeezing the kits out through the wire? I don’t see any injuries on them. Is there anything I can do?? Has this happened to anyone else out there? Please, please, if you are familiar with this, if this has happened to you, tell me everything you know about it! I can’t find anything online. At this point, we’re thinking the best we can do is keep our eyes peeled and wait it out. Any advice or suggestions would be MOST welcome!! Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of this.
Our fourth doe was due three days ago, and we have seen nothing so far. I’m not sure if she didn’t conceive (we did set her under a sun lamp to promote ovulation after breeding), or if she is just retaining due to stress.

have you checked to make sure the kits can’t go threw the cage on their own. when a doe get out of the nest box after feeding them some of the kits still can be nursing and is dragged out of the nest box with the doe. you can put a lip that hangs to the inside of the nest box the kit will be knock off the doe and droped back into the nest.you can take small gage wire and wire it to the bottom of the out side of the cage this will keep the kits from going threw the cage.
Has anyone tried Mold Test kits and actually sent in results to the lab and can share their experience?
0Question : Has anyone tried Mold Test kits and actually sent in results to the lab and can share their experience?
I’ve been renting for about 5 months and the carpet in this house is seriously suspect as well as a regular flooding issue under the house every time it rains and they just let the water sit there for months. I’ve noticed my kids and I are getting sick more. I can’t afford a professional company and I want proof that mold is present in or under the house. Do these kits work? Anyone have experiences like this?

You need to have your landlord test your place for mold. If there is mold then he/she needs to fix the problem. If you have trouble getting your landlord to help you then contact the health department in your state. Just google health department and your states name. GOOD LUCK! I HOPE YOUR KIDS GET BETTER! Here’s something I found:
Regardless of the terms of the lease, there is a law which requires the landlord to repair conditions which materially affect a tenant’s physical health or safety, and to provide hot water to a tenant. Texas law requires the landlord to make reasonable efforts to repair any condition which materially affects the health or safety of an ordinary tenant and to provide hot water to the tenant. The landlord’s failure to comply with this law may entitle a tenant to perform the repair and deduct the costs from rent, a court order requiring the landlord to make the repairs, a court order reducing the rent, and a penalty of one month’s rent plus $ 500. Alternatively, the tenant may terminate the lease, move out, and obtain a penalty of one month’s rent plus $ 500.
As mentioned above a remaining tenant may have conditions repaired and deduct the cost from the rent. This may be done only if:
1) the landlord has failed to remedy the backup or overflow or raw sewage inside the tenant’s dwelling or the flooding from broken pipes or natural drainage inside the dwelling;
2) the landlord has expressly or impliedly agreed in the lease to furnish potable water to the tenant’s dwelling and the water service to the dwelling has totally ceased;
3) the landlord has expressly or impliedly agreed in the lease to furnish heating or cooling equipment; the equipment is producing inadequate heat or cooled air; and the landlord has been notified in writing by the appropriate local housing, building, or health official or other official having jurisdiction, that the lack of heat or cooling materially affects the health or safety of an ordinary tenant; or
4) the landlord has been notified in writing by the appropriate local housing, building, or health official or other official having jurisdiction that the condition materially affects the health or safety of an ordinary tenant.
It is worth noting that under the law, even if you have a claim against your landlord for not maintaining your apartment, you are not excused from paying rent until you take the necessary steps. If you stop paying rent, your landlord could have you evicted.
Here is what you must do to exercise your rights:
1) You must give the landlord written notice. Explain the problem, and tell the landlord that it materially affects your health or safety. You cannot be delinquent in the payment of rent at the time notice is given. The notice should also state that unless the condition is repaired you may terminate the lease, have the condition repaired and deduct the costs of repair from your next rent payment, or bring a civil action for a court order and damages. You should send this notice via certified mail, return-receipt-requested.
2) The landlord has a reasonable time to repair the problem. What is reasonable depends on the facts of the situation. A leaking roof for example, is serious, and a few days may be a reasonable time to repair the leak.
3) If your apartment is not repaired within a reasonable time and you sent the repair notice by certified mail, your landlord is liable. If you gave the notice any other way, you must give the landlord a written second notice and wait another reasonable period of time before your landlord is liable.
If the landlord is liable for not making the repairs, you have the right to:
(1) have the condition repaired and deduct the costs from your next rent payment;
(2) sue and force a rent reduction;
(3) sue and get a court order requiring the landlord to make the repairs; and
(4) sue to recover damages of one month’s rent plus $ 500.
or
1. terminate the lease, move out; and
2. sue to recover damages of one month’s rent plus $ 500.
If you have to hire an attorney and you win the case, the landlord must pay your attorney’s fees.

Are results from mold test kits reliable?
2Question : Are results from mold test kits reliable?
I recently purchased a mold test kit, and it appears some mold was growing in the petri dish after about 48 hours of observation in my basement. Does this mean I definitely have a mold problem and need to hire some mold remediation experts (which I have learned is very costly) or is there still a possibility that the mold is not very significant or harmful? Or, is it possible for me to do mold remediation on my own, short of tearing down and replacing all the drywall?

there are different types of mold tests available eg: air, swab, petri dish….
follow the directions and send it in..they will issue results which will give you a better ideal of what kind of mold it is and possible health issues associated with the mold.
remediation depends on extent.
stop the moisture first. no moisture means no mold.
if you live close to Boise then i can give you a great price on testing..i don’t do remediation….can do radon testing also.

It’s crap. I could elaborate, but trust me. They are for absolute novices, made VERY cheaply. They burn standard photofloods generally, which burn out ridiculously quickly..You’ll spend a TON on bulbs. If you aren’t up for strobes yet, and on a REALLY tight budget, use halogen worklights, with 1/4 blue gels to bring the color temp to tungsten. They are dimmable, Come in 500w 750w 1000w, etc and bulbs are cheap. Get creative. When I first moved into a studio i used them forever, often simply bounced into whitecards…They are made for jobsites, so they’re built tough. If you have a bit more to spend, look on ebay.. search for Lowel Omni, or tota, or dp. They have standard spuds and a ton of accessories available. But smith victor? NONONONO… please, no. You’ll get so sick of them. they heat up terribly, and they aren’t even that inexpensive. Hope this helps.
