Questions to ask previous owner when bringing home a new horse?
7Question : Questions to ask previous owner when bringing home a new horse?
Sunday I am bringing home a 12 year old quarter horse gelding. I am trying to make a list of questions to ask the owner. Heres what I have so far.
What is he currently being fed?
When was he last wormed and what was he wormed with?
What kind of bit do you use on him?
How does he do in the trailer? What protective gear will he need?
How often is he currently being worked?
Adverse reactions to any tack?
Can you think of any others?

What shots did he have, and when was the last time?
When is he due for a check up/teeth floating?
What does the farrier currently do to his hooves? (This will really help your new farrier).

horse or car? could this be the ride you were looking for?
11Question : horse or car? could this be the ride you were looking for?
1. Trail Horse – Your average run around town animal. Has the energy to get where you are going, the brain to find the best way to go, big enough to carry the normal sized American.
2. The Arabian – perfect for those who travel long distances in a day and try to multi task while driving. Although the Arabian may not go to your home or office with out specific instruction, it WILL go somewhere.
3. The Draft – Calling all soccer moms. This big guy can carry the whole team, their gear and snacks. Just like the big machines, this guy will require more fuel, and his shoes will be more expensive than the compact model.
4. The Western Pleasure – The right car for the high end white collar workers. This animal works harder and requires more special knowledge so only the best can figure this out. Be sure to take your cell phone. You won’t be stuck in traffic, you just won’t be getting anywhere fast.
5. The Parelli – Salesmen, stay at home moms, and high school kids will all enjoy this dream. You can load him down with flapping Wal-mart bags, ask him to walk in places a horse won’t fit, and you can dance with him as you listen to the latest tunes.
6. The Ranch – The most dependable animal available. He will go where ever you ask him to, at whatever speed is appropriate. You can tie him to the stop sign and he will be there when you get back. Best of all, this model has been specially engineered to be able to go without water for days and stay fat and slick by eating sagebrush and dead prairie grass.
Of course all models are available in base colors (sorrel, bay, black) Special order colors are available (dun, gray, palomino) and for an additional fee, custom paint jobs are also available (overo, tobiano, blanket, leopard).
No horse is sold with a warranty, however maintenance plans are available in the event brakes, steering, or accelerator fail.

Barbaro’s Full Brother Nicanor Developing Nicely

Although it has been more than seven months since Barbaro was euthanized, owner Roy Jackson says that he and his wife, Gretchen, still receive plenty of letters and fan mail about the fallen champion.
But recently, Jackson says, more of the incoming mail has turned to an uplifting subject – Nicanor, the full brother to Barbaro, by Dynaformer. Now a yearling, Nicanor is only about a month away from being sent to Ocala, Fla., to be broken by John Stevens at his Thoroughbred horse farm in Marion County. Barbaro fans all around the country are anxious to know how little Nicanor is progressing.
“He’s doing fine,” Jackson said Sept. 7. “He’s still at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky. I’ve only seen him four or five times, and it’s been about three months since I was last there. But I’ll get over to see him again while I’m at the (Keeneland September yearling) sale next week. “
Nicanor, out of the Carson City mare La Ville Rouge, was foaled at Mill Ridge on in March, 2006. Like Barbaro, the bay colt is named for one of the six foxhounds in a family heirloom painting that hangs in the Jacksons’ West Grove, Pa. home.
Mill Ridge Stallion Marketing and Sales Development manager Bayne Welker Jr. sees Nicanor almost every day. He said the yearling has all the makings of a fine racehorse. “Nicaonor has developed nicely over the summer and is currently between 900 and 1,000 pounds. He has a good demeanor but has a competitive side when out with other colts,” he said.
“Although his markings don’t resemble Barbaro’s, he is similar in color and stature. He currently comes up in the day out of the summer heat and is groomed and put out at night with other colts in his same age group. He should leave for Ocala around the first of October.”
After his time with Stevens, Jackson said Nicanor will be sent to trainer Michael Matz, who saddled Barbaro during his spectacular racing career. Barbaro won six of seven career races, including the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
If all goes well, Nicanor will begin his racing career in 2008, but no timetable has been set.
** Thanks Streetsensefan! Where is everyone? I’ve been away (working Saratoga), BTW your boy looks phenominal!!! SS is one of the finest horses I have had the pleasure of watching lately.
6:32 MONDAY, Thanks guys. I’ve been watching this category and there was nothing much going on. I really just wanted to get people posting again. I work in, live and breathe racing…LOL!
When you look at it, ALL of racing is hopes and dreams… I loved Barbaro from the first time he set foot on the track. I saw some mighty fine 2 year olds at Saratoga, that’s where I always start my next year’s derby watch.
There is never any guarantee in breeding… look at The Green Monkey, he was supposed to start over the week-end and I don’t think he did! I would just like to see the blood-line of Barbaro continue.

Horse retirement farm in Virginia?
0Question : Horse retirement farm in Virginia?
I have a 20 YO Saddlebred. We have had her since she was 3. For the past 3 years I have been boarding her after 17 years of having her at our home (which we moved). Now I don’t have the time for her that she deserves and it is getting really hard to pay her board. I do not want to sell her. I really don’t trust selling her b/c I don’t trust what might happen to her since her age and she’s not very well trained and she’s part lame b/c of a hoof crack she’s had her entire life. So, I am looking to see if I can find a farm that will take her to retire. But the only ones I can find charge a fee and I can’t afford to do that. I don’t know what to do. I really love her, I just can’t keep her anymore. Any advise would be appreciated.

How about finding a therapedic riding school. Many of these schools take horses and dont charge a fee. If your horse loves people and children, she would fit into a program really well. If you dont know what they do, well it is like physical therapy only for mind and soul as well. Therapedic riding gives a child or adult that cant walk a chance to ride a horse, dreams are endless for people with disabilities and horses! If you cant find one ask a doctor, clinic etc. they sould help you in your area find a center.
