historic community Gruene, Texas, was founded by German immigrant Ernst and Antoinette Gruene in 1849. The Gruene family, including her son moved to New Braunfels in 1845, but land is scarce, so Ernst Gruene moved with his family after the river and built them a house in the German style of truss, and the city began Gruen’s career.

The Gruene family planted cotton on their land, and some years later, twenty to thirty more families arrived in Gruene, helped on the farm fields and build houses for their families. The settlers built homes in a variety of styles, brick buildings, including wooden frame homes, Victorian cottages, and large. A trade shop was opened in 1878, the so-called Green General Store and a cotton mill, which was fed by the Guadalupe River was built at the same time, in the late 1800s.

The city was on the status of a ghost town until 1974, when Pat Molak moved into town and bought Gruene Hall reduced. The dance hall needs some repairs, but shortly after Molak purchased at the hotel and restored, the 6,000 square foot ballroom and outdoor pavilion, a magnet for local musicians and free spirits. Molak was purchased and restored several other historic structures with his friend Mary Jane Nalley, and life breathed back into the town of Gruene.
