Home repair grants in Texas?

Question : Home repair grants in Texas?
Does anyone know of any grant programs in Texas that will pay for home repair? I have a neighbor who lives on SSI and can’t possibly repay any kind of loan. She’s also 10 years too young to qualify for a reverse mortgage. I don’t think her house would qualify, either–the roof is leaking and the foundation is cracked. She also needs a lot of other work.
I’ve checked every website I can think of, including HUD, which only has programs for loans and rural homeowners. Does anyone have any other ideas? This lady really needs help!
I don’t know if she has a social worker or not but her disability is emotional, not physical. Thanks.

It just might be that you are looking in the wrong place for your answer. You have said that she is getting SSI. You don’t say why she is getting SSI. If she is getting SSI because of health and doesn’t qualify for DSS she has a Social worker assigned and may under several different programs have something available. My son was on SSI and had the bathroom completely made over to accommodate him.

Note; Ask her? But she does have a social worker, maybe be by another title called case worker

Oh yeah! I don’t know about any loans, but I sure know there are government grants out there to help you! I’d contact my state rep./state senator and on up to my Congressman/Senator pronto! Especially fed money, since our new President has just signed a stimulus package that includes education moola! It will probably be designated to some and some passed down to the states to distribute (don’t know where you are), so get on it RIGHT NOW. You’ve got to have more specifics to present though…what KIND of school, how MUCH will it take, etc. And you can write them on line…but I’d have a “PLAN OF ACTION” TO PRESENT BEFORE YOU DO! Good luck!

HUD administers the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program which does provide money to state and city governments which may be used to finance local grant and loan programs that may help. Administration is left to the government entity receiving the block grant, so qualifications and who to contact varies from one location to another.

I would start with your local social service agency. They would have a good idea what is available and where to apply. There are also private groups that operate in some areas. The social service agency should have information on that as well.

first time home buyer loans or grants?

Question : first time home buyer loans or grants?
i was thinking about buying a house at the beginning of the year, its this one here:

http://www.realtor.com/mortgage/RatesTable.aspx?lid=1104112102&lntype=F&dper=5&loanterm=30&pts=Zero&isIO=N&ref=listingdetail&hiloanamount=54500&source=web

and i was thinking about getting a first time home buyer loan but i don’t quite know how they work. by the conditions listed i know me and my gf qualify but how does that work with actually buying the house? would that push the monthly mortgage up or is it a grant? would i have to get the loan for the house at the same bank i get the first time buyer loan? and being that i’m getting the first time loan that supposed to cover down payment and closing costs, would i have to pay anything out of my own pocket or will the bank tell me that?

here is the first time buyer program for my state:

http://www.nchfa.com/Homebuyers/HBeligible.aspx

any help is greatly appreciated.
how will that be out of my pocket if the first time home buyer program offers up to 8000 “Down Payment Assistance” if thats not what it means then what is it for?

That is a pretty good interest rate, that is the only thing it provides.

You still have to pay your own deposit, at least 3.5% and pay your own closing costs, although the seller can pay half. Count on another 7k for all of the fees. Closing costs and the downpayment MUST be out of pocket, you can not borrow money for them.

There are no grants to give property to people.

Our reproduction is substantially less expensive than the printed version offered by the Government Printing Office at , and more convenient than the CFDA website. As the catalog itself says, “Get started today exploring the amazing world of grants and loans provided by the Federal Government!”

The “Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance” gives you access to a listing of all Federal programs available to State and local governments (including the District of Columbia); federally recognized Indian tribal governments; Territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and nonprofit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals. You can find assistance programs meeting your requirements and for which you are eligible. You can then contact the office that administers the program and find out how to apply.

Features of the catalog include:

September 11th: Assistance Programs relating to recovery/response and U.S. Government Resources for the events of September 11th * Types of Assistance * Applying for Federal Assistance * Developing and Writing Grant Proposals * Top 10% Program List * All Programs Listed Numerically * 2001 Formula Report * Historical Index

The catalog includes this “note for individuals”: “Many individuals [expect] to find some way to apply for a grant or loan directly from the Federal Government. While there are a limited number of programs offering direct loans to individuals, most programs provide funds to state and local governments or other organization to manage the distribution of assistance according to local needs. For example, a VA or FHA loan comes from a financial institution such as a bank, credit union, or mortgage company, not directly from the Federal Government.” e Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) Please see the Table of Contents tab for a complete list of the agencies with programs included on this CD-ROM.
