Question : Employer required to pay for training hours?
I’m a certified nursing assistant and I worked as a PCA (Patient Care Assistant) at an assisted senior living facility. After hours training and working there for three days I decided the job was not for me. They had poor management skills and they don’t treat employers with respect. While I went through hours of training, the manager told me (verbally) that they were not going to pay me for my training hours until I’ve worked 90 days, which was not stated in their employee handouts. I did some research and according to department of lobar, all training hours must be paid by the employer. Since they stated the no pay for training hours until 90 days verbally, is it their words or the labor department’s words? Just to clarify this too, they HAVE to pay me for working the 3 days regardless of anything right?

You didn’t say where you’re performing this work, but assuming it’s in the United States, yes, they have to pay you. You can file a complaint with the Department of Labor.

I’ve been working for my current employer for just over 4 years, I like my job and really get on well with my boss. I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for almost a year and we’re ready to move in together – he lives two and a half hours’ drive away so I would need to get another job.

There’s a chance that I could do my current job remotely, but I don’t think I would enjoy it as much if I weren’t working with my colleagues. Working on my own from home would be very lonely.

I’ve found a few jobs which I’d like to apply for, but I’m not sure when to tell my current employer that I’m going to be leaving. They’ve already asked me to give them plenty of time, as they’re aware that at some stage I’m bound to move away. My boyfriend is worried that if I tell them too soon, they’ll find a replacement and get rid of me before I have another job.

I don’t think they would be like that, it’s a small company, and I play a vital role, it would be difficult to get the right replacement and I’d like to help train him or her.

I don’t really want to get offered a job and then have to turn around and tell them that I’m giving them my 4 weeks notice and that’s that. They’ve been very good to me, but a new employer isn’t going to want to wait much more than a month for me. But at the same time, I don’t want to tell my current employer that I’ll be moving away and it take months for me to find another job and just keep them hanging…

Anyone have any ideas? It’s a really difficult situation…

More directly, if you are employed by a company and write a program that is used by that company, does the company own it? Can the person that developed it copyright it? Would there need to be a clause in the employees contract that gave the company rights to the software? Is it possible that if a company employed a person that wrote software that was critical to the operation of the company, that the person could use the software against the company if any “bad” situation was to occur? Especially if the company had never thought to protect themselves from such an incident.

You are really beating about the bush on this one, aren’t you?!? Under most circumstances, the company that employs you owns computer programs developed for that company’s use while you were employed there. If the “company never thought to protect themselves” then they probably shouldn’t be in the business of computer programming. I can’t believe anyone would be that stupid.

I am in health care and my new employer (not for long) doesn’t compensate if I work through my lunch break, they won’t pay OT. If you stay over for some reason or another, they call you at home the next day and say ” you can come in 30 min later”. Or if you do a double they make youtake the next day off. Which might be good for some people, but sometimes I like to work a little OT around the holidays for Xtra $ $ ! Or some people I work with they depend on OT to help out with the bills! I don’t see how this company can get away with this! No wonder the employee turnover is so high!! Plus the insurance and benefits are crap! Sorry just had to vent!

If you are an hourly employee then you must be paid for overtime. It can’t be compensated with time off. If you receive a salary you can be compensated with time off. There is no law about paid holidays or vacations. In California you must be given at least a 30 minute lunch break but it is unpaid. There is also a morning and afternoon 15 minute break that is paid.

The only problem is that you can report the employer and he can’t file you for that but I guarantee you will be fired for something and never get promoted. I would find another job.

I work for redbox automated dvd rental, and i am moving to chicago where their corporate and call center is located. i am applying for two jobs internally, one for customer service team lead and one for employee care generalist- my “knowledge, skills and abilities” section is basically applicable to each job- should i change my resume for the different jobs, or is this unnecessary? they know who i am anyway

I started my new job a couple of weeks ago after moving to a new place. In mid-Feb., I will receive a large amount of money as part of the company’s relocation policy. Their relocation partner calculated the amount based on a number of variables in my scenario (single vs. married w/ kids, having to buy a home vs. renting, how many miles the move was, etc). I was told that the amount they quoted me is “the pre-tax, grossed up amount”. When asking them to clarify what “grossed up” means, they stated, “Grossed up means the (business name) takes care of the taxes. The ($ amount) is what you will receive clear – no taxes are deducted from that amount. ”

My understanding is that I will not have to pay taxes on the amount, ever–that the company pays taxes before giving me the check, similar to what my take home pay on my check is–but then I started doubting myself when a friend advised me to make sure I wouldn’t have to pay taxes on it at the end of the year. Can someone please confirm?

I think it means they paid you an extra amount to cover what you pay on the taxes. You will get a huge tax break for moving though, I think. I moved a few years back for a job and I had to claim every penny of the moving money. I am pretty sure “grossed up” means they paid the extra amount though?

Question : My employer is transferring my job… What should I do about housing in this market?
My employer recently announced that I have 6 months to relocate from Boise, ID to Seattle, WA in a consolidation move. I believe I am resigned to accept the transfer, considering that 80% of the office was terminated without any transfer option, and because there are no jobs in my field available in Boise.

THE DILEMMA:
The housing market continues to trend on a deep downward slope, as it has for a year and a half now. Should I sell both homes that I own in Boise (my mother lives in one of them, but I think we’ll need to consolidate households in order to weather this financial set back), or rent one/both out? Should I buy outright, and hope the market will regain its losses? Should I settle for nothing more than a short sale, in order to minimize my entry cost? Or should I rent until that downward slope starts to level off?
BTW, I should’ve mentioned that I have just a couple of weeks to make the decision, but my employer isn’t closing the office for another 6 months, so I don’t have to move until the end of summer. Another thought I’ve had is to sell both of my houses now, and rent in Boise until having to move to Seattle. That will get me out of a downward housing market for 6 months and get an even better deal when moving to Seattle.

Look at comparable houses in your area that have sold within the past few months, and if they’re selling for much less than you were hoping to sell yours for I’d recommend renting the houses out.

Seattle is an expensive place to live, and they haven’t been hit as hard yet as the rest of the country has by the housing crisis. Unless your relocation package requires you to buy a new house in Seattle right away, I’d recommend renting for a year to get a feel for where you’d like to live, how traffic will be for your commute (traffic can get bad there), and wait for the housing there to catch up to the rest of us as far as prices dropping goes. Good luck!

Or can you? What would you do if you are of this form to the growing where you work and your employer does not want to discover something? How do you want to complain about the form and keep your job at the same time?

Sometimes it’s easy to get to an employer to care of a mold problem as soon as they realize it can be a problem for their own health as well.

But what about those employers who do not seem to matter what form, to their employees or customers? It is dangerous and can cause all kinds of health problems, what do you do then? Keep quiet about it?

Keep the complainant and the risk of your job? It really does not matter what state you live, the truth is, if an employer wants to get rid of them, they may be used for almost any reason they want, and that makes such questions difficult to overcome if you keep your job.

Try talking to your boss about the first issue and explain everything that way can the human health do. Explain that it could not cause such damage, both his staff and others to enter buildings.

Talk about structural damage, it could be the cause or how it could be the product that you produce will be damaged in any way. In most cases this is sufficient, but if they do not care?

There are a few different things you can do. You can stop whining about it and leave them alone for a moment, then talk to someone at work in your state Safety and Health Administration about the problem or your local health department in the county. Mold in the workplace is a breach of security for the employer.

If you’re in a public building like a hospital or a library, and nothing is done about the problems of form, see if you take some pictures of the infestation and to your local newspaper or television news station.

This should draw attention to the problem that created it is supported, but can not suffer your work. Your employer may for all that he can dismiss or she wants, but if they complain to you about the fire form continue, please.

What usually happens is they do their best to find a reason to do, they get rid of you, but if you think that’s what they want to pay back your exposure to the mold problem, contact your attorney.
