Is there any government support in the US for disabled adults with MS? Any way to pay for a nursing home?
6Question : Is there any government support in the US for disabled adults with MS? Any way to pay for a nursing home?
My mom is 50 and has late stage MS, it is very hard for her to move around, and her life at this home usually consisted of laying in bed, eating, playing puzzle games on her laptop, and going to the bathroom.
A bit ago she went to live in her boyfriend’s home because it was easier to live in. Turns out recently he was looking at personals online…and he says her being around is stressing him out and raising his blood pressure or something.
So now, shes staying over at his house tonight but is coming home tomorrow. I have 16 credit hours at college and will be getting a job soon, so I cant be here all the time to take care of her to the degree that she needs. My sisters too work all the time and will be going to college to further their education, but it is still very difficult.
We are also selling this home soon because it is part of the divorce agreement…. My mom will get around 54 thousand once the house does sell, but we dont know when it will sell. while 54 thousand sounds like a lot, it cannot pay for a nursing home or a dedicated house attendant (assisted living probably woudlnt be enough).
Our family cannot afford to put her in a nursing home, and the conditions of her living at this house will be deplorable.
My question is, does anyone know of any government support that can be used to help in a situation like this? She makes next to no money. Ive heard of people getting paid to take care of their parents as a full time state-paid job, but when this house sells…where is she going to live? This situation just sucks and I cant find a way out of it.

I am disabled and live in Virginia. Can anyone help me force my husband to pay the agreed spousal support?
2Question : I am disabled and live in Virginia. Can anyone help me force my husband to pay the agreed spousal support?
Hi. I am in a bind and seriously need to find someone who can help me. I am not looking for a handout. I am permanently disabled and last year I found out my husband of 12 years had fathered a child the year before. I was devastated. During the weeks the child was conceived I was in UVA with a major heart attack. I filed for divorce as soon as I could scrape together the money the lawyer asked for. She drew up an agreement that we both signed. In the agreement I relinquished ownership of all motor vehicles including 2 financed trucks that I was cosigner on. Also, I gave up 2 drag race cars that we owned jointly. Admittedly, I was still in shock and extreme emotion distress over my life being turned upside down so suddenly. I honorably stood beside everything I had agreed to. I gave him chances to do the right thing and also stand by his obligations as drawn up in my lawyer’s agreement. He was supposed to keep me covered under his health insurance until the divorce was final. He dropped me a month after the document was drawn up. That was 11 months ago. He also agreed to a VERY reasonable spousal support payment of 700.00 a month. My lawyer encouraged me to ask for 1100.00 saying that according to his income that was the calculated amount but I tried to be fair about it, hoping he would pay if the amount was a little more reasonable. He paid 5 months. I have not gotten a dime since March, and that wasn’t even the full amount. I have paid for both halves of the divorce just to get it finished. I have sold EVERYTHING I own except for my home which I make the mortgage on out of my disability check. Including the mortgage, electric, phone and homeowner’s insurance I pay out more a month than I make. I have exhausted all local financial help and cannot afford a lawyer’s help in forcing him to pay me. PLEASE…someone tell me what the correct thing to do is. I desperately need that money. I am behind in the mortgage and can barely afford food and get no help because I couldn’t have children. If you need more information I would tell you whatever would help you to help me. I am desperate. Thank you for any help I get.
Last night he threatened to kill me. That was new. Also informed me he would rather sit in jail than pay. I am inclined to believe him. I HATE that he could just get off scott free for everything..the money, the cheating, the threats. But I’m even in more doubt now that I can do anything and even though no one else would EVER suspect I am afraid. After 13 years I have seen him do some VERY violent things. I got a restraining order this morning but lets face it…that only protects you so much.

Is this Legal?Breach of Contract to help pay housing cost for the disabled?
0Question : Is this Legal?Breach of Contract to help pay housing cost for the disabled?
In August of 2006 Andrew Doe(and family) a child with cerebral palsy and severe allergies, had poor living condition that involved mold, silverfish all through out the home,Doe family then gave the property owner a 30 days notice after failed inspection with the section 8/ Metropolitian Housing Authority.
The Doe family urgently looked for better housing and once a home was found it wasn’t rent reasonable,so the Doe family found other housing but the owner would have to lower the rent from $ 650 to $ 579 to make it affordable for the Doe family.Owner of Apartment agreed to except the rental amount of $ 579 on August 30th 2006,The Section 8 program were slow to process the request to inspect housing in the time alloted which was 14 days after the Owner of the apartment excepted the amount of $ 579,instead Section 8 housing caused the Doe family to use all its SSI income of $ 603 as rent, for the month of September, and that brought horrible hardships on the family, behind on bills and no food.

In section 8 housing, you sign two contracts…one with the Housing Authority, one with your landlord. Let’s look at each contract to see if there was a breach. Then, let’s talk about practical solutions for your current situation. Then, let’s talk about what could have been done differently to prevent this.
Did the new landlord breach a contract? I’m talking about the landlord that agree to accept $ 579. You say that you had to use all of your $ 603. If you had a contract with him that said he would accept $ 579, then he breached that contract with you by refusing to accept only $ 579. I can’t tell by your question how much you actually paid. If he is requiring you to pay $ 650 until section 8 kicks in, then I suspect something else is going on. Sometimes landlords and tenants agree to tell the housing authority that the landlord is accepting a lower amount of rent (in this case $ 579), but then they have a side agreement that the tenant will pay the difference (in this case, an additional $ 71 or 650-579). That is a form of fraud. If you get caught doing that, you will not just lose your section 8, but you will be required to pay back all of the money that section 8 paid, and you may go to jail. But, like I said, there is not enough information to tell how much you actually paid.
What about the Housing Authority? you say that they were slow to process your request to inspect the housing, but you don’t say how slow. You also don’t show how you have been damaged. You should have paid September’s rent on September 1st. If the housing authority took 14 days to process the request, you still would have already paid that rent. Unfortunately, this is not an unusual situation. If the Housing Authority had a contract with you to provide an inspection within 14 days, and if you could prove that your rent wasn’t due until the 15th day, then perhaps you could argue that they breached it. But I have never heard of a landlord that allows a tenant to move in on the 1st, but pay rent on the 15th.
Or, are you saying that you paid that rent to the old landlord because you couldn’t move in to the new place? If that is the case, why would you pay a full month’s rent if you were only going to stay for a portion of the month. Usually, if you gave your landlord a 30 day notice in the middle of the month, you would prorate your next month’s rent rather than pay the entire month. Again, there is not enough info in the question to know exactly what happened to you.
You lost about $ 400. Practically speaking, what can you do to get it back? You can’t afford to pay an attorney on an hourly basis, and no attorney will take your case for a third of $ 400 if you win. Don’t go after the Housing Authority without an attorney. If they suspect that you commited fraud like I discussed above, you will lose your voucher. But you may have a good case against your old owner. He accepted rent for a property that was uninhabitable. The property had mold and was unhealthy. You already have documentation (the failed inspection) that proves the condition of the property. If you can prove that the landlord knew about the condition of the property and failed to fix the problem and that you suffered because of this (it would be great if you can document visits to the doctor in August of 2006), then you might have a good case against the previous landlord. That case might be worth quite a bit more than $ 400…maybe even enough to convince a lawyer to help you. Ask the housing authority for a copy of the failed inspection report. If you wrote letters to your old landlord to complain about the conditions, you should have kept copies. Then find an attorney in your area that specializes in habitiability issues or tenant’s rights.
What could you have done differently to protect yourself? 30 days is not enough time to find adequate section 8 housing. Having a disabled child probably limits your housing options. You should have waited until after you found housing before giving your 30 day notice. Talk to your section 8 worker to let them know what is going on and why you need to leave your current property. Section 8 is a “use it or lose it” program. Typically, if you don’t use your voucher for 30 days, you lose it. That is because there are a lot of people waiting for these vouchers and they don’t want them to go to waste. But if your child has a disability that limits your housing options, you can request a reasonable accommodation for that disability in the form of an extension (to keep your voucher without using it) of up to 6 months. In the meantime, you could live with family or friends or talk to an attorney about withholding rent from your slumlord to save money.
Good luck.

1Question : Home improvement (ramp) Program for a disabled person?
I have a son that is paralyzed and is mobile in a wheel chair. My porch is old and I needed improved with a ramp to be able to move him. I am older, so he is confined to the house unless relatives come to pick him up in the wheel chair. This is dangerous and the problem will get worst as I get older. Also, I am retired and lived on a fixed income. Please let me know about programs. I live in Chicago.

I am trying to start a business dealing with care for children living at home with their parents. I want to propose a good business plan in order to get grants, loans, and investors in order to get the ball rolling.
I want to figure out the demographic concerning disabled persons under 21 in CT. I know this may or may not be difficult due to privacy laws. Can anyone direct me to a site or phone number…or any general ideas…on how to get an accurate number?

try the websites for various disabilities with chapters in our state of Connecticut. For example i was born with spina bifida and past president of our CT chapter years ago. You could also try the state of CT website search there for example, our birth to 3 programs WIC program HUSKY insurance program. Wish u luck as i have been involved over the years with housing issues since state housing authorities were ordered, in 1993 i think, the law was changed so ppl such as myself non-elderly disabled can live in state elderly housing and there is a great need for many more units cp in CT

Not really. Unfortunately, one of the golden rules of buying a home (as you should know) is that if you cannot afford a house, you are not entitled to have a house. There MIGHT be some local non-profits in his area that MIGHT offer something, but even then non-profits DO NOT like to get tied down to long term obligations.

Well, car and home insurance isn’t based on what you can afford. I”ve never run into any “assistance” program that pays your insurance.
For the car, well, maybe you can sell it. Most states I know of, give free transportation to doctor’s appointments if you’re on Medicare.
On the homeowners, WOW, do you know how many NON disabled people can’t afford to own their own home? If you can’t afford it, maybe you should sell that, too. On that limited income, if you’re disabled, you can probably get assistance with rent through your local welfare office. Alternatively, you can rent out a room, and use that income to help you pay the house expenses.
When disabled young adults need assisted living facilities, are they usually mixed with the senior citizens?
7Question : When disabled young adults need assisted living facilities, are they usually mixed with the senior citizens?
In other words, when disabled young adults want to live on their own, and need an assisted living facility to do it, are there separate facilities with mostly young people, or are they mixed in with the elderly in the local assisted living/retirement facility?
I’m physically handicapped, and after I finish college, I want to live on my own. Is this an unreasonable concern?
i don’t have the time right now, but i’ll explain more about my disability when i get the chance.

I doubt very much if they are mixed in with seniors. There are always ads placed with the disabilities organizations wherein 2 people with disabilities get together and have their own apartment. The problem I see that occurs though is that if they aren’t “earning” (because benefits are low) then where they get government assistance to live by themself or with someone is usually in a not-so-good neighborhood. They would be better off to live with parents or family. Depends, since you didn’t say your disability I don’t know if what you need is a universal style apartment, or if your need is a medical staff nearby, or if you need assistance with certain things. Assisted living can be anything from them just giving you your meds daily, to making meals, or moving a person back and forth to and from a bed. It’s such a large range of things. So I don’t know what to advise you.
