Question : 2001 Honda Civic Transmission prob/ NJ auto inspection?

Here are my questions/problems… I bought 2001 Honda civic from some private party for 6000$ .. It had about 79K miles when I got it…The very next day after bringing the car home the check engine light came on, I gat it check at pepboys, they told be some thing was wrong with transmission but I would have to go to the Honda dealership to get more detailed diag, Light went off after few weeks and I forgot about it like it never happed. About 3-4 months ago (with 83K miles) light came back on this time I had it checked by Honda dealership, They told me transmission has failed + It needed to get the time belt change. Again light went off after few days but every time I put the key in agnation “Main REQD” blinks for about 4-5 time and then goes away. Now, the thing is that my car’s inspection is expiring in Jan’09 and According to NJ laws I have to get it inspected before two months (Which gives me like 3 more week of this Nov’08). Following are my questions:

1.With current situation, (Check engine light OFF & “Main reqd” blinking when inserting the key) If I take for Inspection what are the chances of passing?
2.What happens If Fails during inspection?
3.If I get the car repaired how much would it cost?
4.How long would it take to get it repaired?
5.How to find a reliable repair shop?

Despite your Engine Light on which PEP boys has identified as being related to transmission, your car should pass Smog check inspection. Your car’s transmission usually does not contribute to bad exhaust output.

If you fail inspection, get help from the Smog check inspectors to identify which harmful gases is attributing to your car’s smog check inspection failure. This will help you target which parts to repair or replace in order to pass inspection again.

Buy or borrow an On Board Diagnostic scanner (ODB II) from your local auto parts store and connect the device to an interface port underneath your driver’s side dashboard. Start the ignition and write down the Error Code related to your Engine Light. Then repost your question with the Error Code to help identify what the problem may be and what costs may be involved.

Finding a reliable repair shop is important as finding an honest repair shop. Get advice from your neighbors and friends especially one’s with some level of auto repair knowledge.

Also, if you haven’t had an oil and oil filter change have that done so you can feel comfortable about clearing your green maintenance reminder indicator.
