Am I being paid fairly?
2I’m working for a State Farm agent making $ 11 an hour. I have my property and casualty licenses and I am also S.F. bank certified. I answer the phones, handle service work, basic admin./office manager duties, as well as sales of home and auto policies. I’m barely making $ 20,000. If I were to actually use my medical allowance for health insurance, I would be taking home even less!!
I feel like I am underpaid. I keep hearing about others in my same position getting paid significantly more. I’m living near Charlotte, NC too so I’m not in the back woods of BFE somewhere. I have asked for a raise but really don’t think it is going to happen because some excuse always pops up. I’ve been here for over a year and a half with no increase. I feel bad asking for money or making anyone “uncomfortable” but I feel like I am getting screwed. It is a small office, as in under 4 people and I do a bulk of the work….
Do you think I am being paid fairly? What should I do?
UGH…. I already have a part time job at the mall and SADLY it pays similarly to my full time job. ![]()

There is no requirement to license a car if it is not driven on public roads. You can leave your car on private property forever without current license plates if you like.
It has nothing to do with who’s land it is.
HOWEVER: Your condo agreement may very well have a provision requiring that all cars on the premises have current registration, in order to prevent people from leaving junk cars lying around. Check your agreement.
Is Obama’s gift gaffe with Gordon Brown the epitome of his naivety when it comes to being President?
15Question : Is Obama’s gift gaffe with Gordon Brown the epitome of his naivety when it comes to being President?
The Obamas, Barack and Michelle both, pretty much diplomatically botched the recent visit of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife. Oddly enough, the U.S. Old Media seems uninterested in the story that is a hot topic in England, a story that’s left many Brits a bit miffed.
As the visit of the national leader of our closest ally began, the President informed the Brits that he wouldn’t be attending the joint press conference that was planned to be held once PM Brown’s plane touched down. This threw the visiting delegation into a tizzy leaving them scrambling to explain the sudden change in plans to the folks back home. Still, meetings were had and things smoothed out. Eventually the visit seemed to right itself… then came the Obama’s gift gaffes.
It is well understood that visiting diplomatic delegations come bearing gifts and gift giving is returned in like fashion by the host country. It is an ages old human practice in diplomacy after all. Usually the gifts are valuable, representative of the products of the nations involved, or at least symbolic of the history of those nations.
For his part, PM Brown gave two symbolic gifts and one that expressed national pride. Brown came bearing a pen holder carved from the timbers of the sister ship of that which gave the wood to create the famous “Resolute Desk,” the desk that has been in America’s charge since 1880. He also gave Obama the framed commission for that famous ship, the HMS Resolute. His third gift was a seven-volume biography of one of England’s greatest leaders, Winston Churchill.
So, what did President Obama give the British PM? 25 movies on DVD. Yeah, that’s it. Brown gives a symbolic gift like the pen holder fashioned from a famous British warship and Obama responds by sending a staffer to WalMart to pick up a few quick movies.
How thoughtful. Or not.
And I’m not the only one to scoff at this thoughtless gift. The entire British press is up in arms. Many in Britain are seeing this as entirely gauche and indicative of the low esteem in which the Obama’s hold England.
Worse, no one is 100% sure that Obama was smart enough to know that DVDs made in America don’t play on European DVD players. American DVDs are created in the “Region One” format while those in Europe play in “Region Two” format. A U.S. DVD just won’t play on a machine made for the English market.
Not to be out done in tastelessness by her husband, Michelle got into the act, too. Mrs. Brown came bearing two outfits for the Obama girls from Topshop, one of Britain’s trendiest and expensive women’s wear retail outlets.
In return, Michelle apparently had a staffer run down to the White House gift shop and grab two toy Marine One helicopter models for the Brown’s boys.

How do I avoid being penalized for earned income while starting college?
1Question : How do I avoid being penalized for earned income while starting college?
I own a home next to New Orleans that was not flooded by Hurricane Katrina and I want to sell it and move to Maryland to attend college. I intend to rent a room from a friend for cheap until I graduate. Meanwhile, I might be earning around 50K from this sale before taxes and fees. How can I still qualify for financial aid with this lump sum? Should I put it away in a CD or if I decided to buy more property where hurricanes do not exist and rent it out to someone cheap…without making a big stink about my not residing in that home so the gov. may not notice? I intend to not work at all through my entire college career because if I let myself work I will FLUNK OUT! I am an easily distracted student but I want to do this right this time!
PLEASE HELP!

If you have already received your financial aid package, don’t worry about anything. Just act like nothing happened.
And, if you have not received your financial aid package yet, don’t run to tell the financial aid office that you are about to sell a house for 50K.
The only way I see that this could affect your financial aid is if you are heavily depending on federal loan/grants. If you got or are going to get institutional grant/scholarship, you shouldn’t worry about anything.

Is the will of “We the people” finally going to to hold sway on immigration into America?
WASHINGTON
The House and the Senate moved yesterday toward a piecemeal crackdown on illegal immigration, pushing forward separate bills to require photo identification to vote, build fences on the U.S.-Mexico border and speed the deportation of undocumented workers. The bills would take the place of President Bush’s far broader rewrite of the nation’s immigration laws.
Voting almost completely along party lines, the House voted 228-196 for a bill that would require all who register to vote in federal elections to show photo identification that proves that they are U.S. citizens.
The Senate, meanwhile, voted 94-0 to take up a bill passed by the House last week to build 700 miles of double-layered fencing on the U.S.-Mexico border, with a final vote to come as early as Monday.
Today, the House is scheduled to take up bills to speed up the deportation of illegal immigrants, ratchet up penalties for immigrant gang members and human smugglers, end an exemption for Salvadoran illegal immigrants from rapid deportation, make it a crime to tunnel under the border, and overtly deputize state and local police officers to enforce federal immigration laws.
In an interview on CNN, Bush said he would sign the legislation, even though it does not embrace a more comprehensive approach – including a guest-worker program – that he has backed.
“Yes, I’ll sign it into law,” he said. “I would view this as an interim step. I don’t view this as a final product.”
Passage of the legislation – should it occur – would permit leaders of the Republican-controlled Congress to claim they have taken steps to deal with the flood of illegal immigrants. It is an issue that has rent the party, spawned demonstrations in many cities last spring, and called into question the Republicans’ ability to face tough issues.
“Border security is national security,” said Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., the chairman of the House Rules Committee, with House GOP leaders by his side. “We’re going to try our daggonest to enact as many of these bills as we can.”
With little more than a week left before the Sept. 29 start of Congress’s scheduled recess, GOP leaders are considering appending some or all of the bills to a must-pass spending bill before they leave town. But Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., the Appropriations Committee chairman, appeared to close off that avenue last night, saying he will not add any legislative language onto the spending bills that could slow their progress in the final days before the coming recess.
The sudden rush of activity startled immigrant and civil-rights groups, which had largely thought a legislative response on illegal immigration was dead for the year. The National Immigration Law Center sent out an “urgent” notice to allies to prod them into action, saying, “In recent days, there has been a serious deterioration of the position of pro-immigrant forces in Congress.”
The legislators’ embrace of a piecemeal approach came as members of a private task force on immigration repeated its belief that a comprehensive solution is necessary to solve the nation’s problems with illegal immigration. The task force’s plan includes strong border enforcement and a program that allows illegal immigrants already in the country to stay by paying a stiff fine.
But it also proposes that the president and Congress establish two federal organizations that would regulate the flow of immigrants and help them assimilate into society. Former Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-Ind., who was a co-chairman of the Migration Policy Institute task force with former Sen. Spencer Abraham, R-Mich., said that the House’s approach is too draconian against illegal immigrants, and a Senate bill approved in May is too complex.
Most of the provisions in the bills the legislators are now considering were plucked from the House’s border-security and anti-illegal-immigration bill that passed in December, then prompted protests this spring that brought millions of illegal immigrants into the streets. But Republicans say that the politics of illegal immigration have shifted in favor of their get-tough approach. Even some Republicans who have backed Bush’s approach, such as Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., said yesterday that the shift among voters in favor of “enforcement first” is palpable.
“While I’ve made it clear that I prefer a comprehensive solution, I have always said we need an enforcement-first approach to immigration reform,” said Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn., the majority leader, who surprised many immigration-rights activists when he took up the House border-fencing bill.
Cecilia Munoz, the vice president of the National Council of La Raza, said that Republicans “are politically playing with fire” with Hispanic voters, who gave 40 percent of their vote to Bush in 2004.
The rhetoric in the House yesterday was particularly heated, with a stream of black and Hispanic Democrats taking to the floor to denounce a voter-ID bill that they called a “modern-day poll tax” intended to disenfranchise minority, elderly and disabled voters who lean Democratic.

Is Nevada proof that being too “business-friendly” can harm a state?
7Question : Is Nevada proof that being too “business-friendly” can harm a state?
Back in the early 1990′s, Nevada rewrote its tax and legal codes, with the goal of making Nevada the easiest place in America to do business, set up a company, and so on.
For a while, it succeeded – without much regulation, all sorts of speculators and home-builders and fly-by-night operations moved into the state. Las Vegas was a boomtown – between 1995 and 2005, it was the fastest-growing large city in all of America. The metro area went from around 800,000 to 1.8 million in a short span of time.
However, a lot of this was built on top of a bubble. Today, Nevada’s unemployment rate is 14.4% – the highest in America. Higher than Michigan. Despite the low taxes and lack of regulation, people and companies are avoiding Nevada.
Does this prove that being too business-friendly can actually lead to a boom-bust cycle that ends up hurting a state?
Nevada lacked a strong set of regulatory agencies that could have slowed down the rise of the bubble by auditing things like mortgage applications, or doing more construction inspections (and thus forcing construction companies to hire legal workers instead of illegals, and to repair code violations).
Why didn’t Nevada take these measures?
“They were attacked and ‘boycotted’ by other states (which is totally unconstitutional) for trying to enforce FEDERAL immigration law.”
No, they most certainly were not. You’re thinking of Arizona.
“If you are looking for the cause look no farther than Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae and Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.”
Nope, that’s not a good explanation. If it were, every single state in America would have had the same bubble as Nevada – but Nevada is unique in terms of the size and intensity of its own local bubble. This was due to lax local regulation, zoning, etc.
