Blocking a Scene: Basic Staging with Actors

0

  • Michael Joyce and two student directors demonstrate the basic steps in blocking a scene. They begin with script analysis, dividing the scene into working units, while providing practical tips for laying out and developing a floor plan. Each student director tackles the same scene but with a different approach while Joyce analyzes the blocking process and discusses alternatives. The work demonstrated in this video is based on a scene from Shaw’s Candida.

Why does Billy Elliott: The Musical have 3 actors playing Billy?

5

I know that the movie had only one actor. I’m fairly certain that it’s not one actor and two understudies, I’ve seen clips of the show and they appear to be portraying Billy in three persons. Both the London and Broadway shows use three actors.

If anyone has seen the show in London or on Broadway, what is the purpose of three actors versus one? What exactly is the relationship between the three actors as one character?
I realize the need for multiple actors so to give the kids a break, but sections of the show that I’ve seen has them all on stage at once, performing as a singing and dancing trio.

I’m wondering why a trio versus just one.
