Wake County has been the scene of acrimonious dispute since the school board voted to scrap a decade-old policy that used busing to achieve socio-economic balance in public schools. The NAACP and other groups have staged protests and marches and filed a federal civil rights complaint.

Parents and residents who spoke in favor of the new policy at Tuesday’s board meeting said busing for the purpose of economic diversity poses an unfair burden on families, in terms of costs to the district and in time that children could spend on learning rather than being transported.

•Accountability – A Wake County School Board that is accountable to Wake parents, students and taxpayers and members and will lead based on principle;
•Flexibility – Revision of the student assignment policy, which includes supporting stability for individual students, KEEPING SIBLINGS TOGETHER, and recognizing families as INDIVIDUALS rather than NODES within a system. This also includes creation of additional options for parents and students when a proposed assignment is unfavorable;
Would you be okay with this? I mean honestly….would you? Remember this is your child that is going to sit on a bus for an extra 40 minutes to go to a school that isn’t even near your home. In the name of “diversity”?
Country Club? you are lying.

The Kennedys were the biggest busing proponents because no Kennedy kid was ever going to be bussed!
This sounds like the Busing policy they first instilled in the 70′s in the name “Of DIVERSITY” as you so eloquently put it. In Wisconsin in some bigger urban areas they try to keep ” schooling zones” according to where you live, but in some cases will move children around so there is a more evenly mixed culture of economic and socioeconomic blends of families. The problem is kids who are not used to being in a non caucasian setting, feel preyed upon and are usually not allowed to participate in class even if they really wanted to. I am not suggesting this is only typical of a Black Urban culture, but statistically this and in a Caucasian culture make up more of it percentage wise than any other races.
Now there are schools in Beloit that have a large Black and lower class children population that have used tougher Principles and their Assistants to make for a safer environment for ALL children, and will not allow for any B.S to interfere with a childs desire to learn. But this is only but a small town of only 35,000 ppl and is also the ONLY High School in town. I just think if these same measures were used in larger Metropolitan areas, we could live with some of these choices. Busing never seems to work as it’s intended as most Liberal feel good programs are intended to work.
It’s not about mixing races cultures either, it’s about the amount of time it takes for children to reach their destinations in the morning, and then get home nearly after 5:00pm some days and then have to do Homework? That is a great deal of stress to put on a child who lives but 1/2 mile from the school which would be far more convenient for them to attend.
