Question : How do you report a landlord who has a mold infested home he rents. I lived there and was very sick.?
We rented a home in Cedar Park Tx. We had to sign a lease and the home looked fine at first. Mold appeared everywhere. In the lease it was stated that we were responsible for mold. There wasn’t any when we first looked at the house but weren’t able to move in for a month due to the landlord working on it. There was mold everywhere. Under every sink, the showers, etc. I called him and he said oh well. I got very sick, had headaches and thought I had the flu all of the time. I got a liver disease and we finally were able to buy a new home. I have not been sick since. He has re rented this property. He is a slum lord. My question is how do you stop these people? Who do you call?

I don’t know about Texas. I’m in California and I work with housing here. My first thoughts would be in your area, The Housing Authority, Health Department, Department of Fire and Safety (safety being the key there), Center for Disease Control along with any county agencies even if it’s just to report this person. Hopefully the building will be shut down and if you pursue I would imagine that you can file against him for the health problems. We have had to deal with slum lords here constantly. Be persistent and don’t give up cause you don’t want to see this happen to another. Also, when all else fails try to find an attorney even if it’s just legal aid, they sometimes are more interested in doing something FOR the people. Another thing to do is report the whole mess to local and larger papers. They are interested in these types of stories. Remember this is not just a statewide phenomenon. Good luck!

Report it not only to the Health Dept. but also report him to the Better Business Bureau. He may have other properties that have a similar problem and others, maybe children are getting sick. I am not sure about your state laws, but he may actually be responsible for your medical bills as well.
If you made a “check list” when you moved in and had put the mold on it, he IS responsible for any health problems directly connected to it. The Health Dept. should have the law on that.

Contact your local Health department and also take pictures of the mold.A friend of mine dealt with this problem also.She took a video camera and pictures with her digital camera.Her children were sick all the time too. Good Luck
