Question : What to do when a parent needs to go into Nursing Home?
I need anyone’s help who has dealt with similar situation. My mother has been diagnosed with 5th stage dementia. However she refused to go back t the doctors that made this diagnosis. It was a senior care specialist that diagnosed her.
She has been going to her family doctor but he is almost worthless. He’s just been treating her for high blood pressure and does not know how to treat the dementia.
Since she will not take any medications for the Dementia (she was given Seroquel (sp?) but would not take it. We tried mixing it with her foods in a liquid form and she still wouldn’t take it.
Now, she’s gotten 100 times worst. Hallucinating, thinking people are out to get her and now thinking someone is attacking her body. I’m at a lost as what to do. She needs to go into a Nursing Home, but I don’t know how to go about admitting her without a Doctors’s Note. Any suggestions anyone has will be appreciated. Serious answers only. She’ll be 80 on her birthday, June 1st.

Find a social services person in the community in which your mother lives. They can walk you through the whole thing, answer all your questions and would know the people in your mother’s community that would need to be contacted. They can also assess what can and can’t be done by talking directly to a family member. Good Luck. I found them to be very helpful.

I went through almost the same thing a little over a year ago. Had taken care of my maternal grandmother for 11 years all by myself. No family help at all. I finally got a Home Health Agency , with Medicare’s help, to come and monitor her, and after three weeks, the nurse saw going on exactly what I had been telling them was going on, and it was with her help and well placed telephone calls that I got my grandmother into a nursing home two days later. My grandmother died this past February 27. Don’t wait to try all avenues to get her help because there comes a point when you CANNOT do it by yourself any longer and YOUR health and YOUR mental status is of the utmost importance. The only other thing that I wish I hadn’t done was argue with Grandma. She was combative, argumentative, violent, and I could not handle her 200 pounds by myself any longer. Try calling a Home Health Agency and see if they can send a nurse out for an evaluation. Grandma went in to the nursing home without having gone straight from a hospital setting, as is common with Medicare admittance to a nursing home. I will pray that you will find the right help that will change your life and the life of your mother for the positive.

Check out some nursing homes near you and ask them if they can put you in touch with a doctor that will agree to sign her in. I’m sure you know that this is not going to get better and the further down she goes, the harder it will be on everyone. Whatever you do, dont put your mother into an acute hospital’s psychiatric unit. I’ve worked in one for more than 30 years, and you dont want to know how they treat geriatric patients. A good nursing home that under a doctor’s supervision will be much better. I can guarantee you, your mother will never agree to do this, but she needs to and you need to get on with your life. God bless you for loving your mother so much.

perhaps your first step is to find your mother a better doctor… one who will recognize your mother’s issues and current needs. you can discuss what you are legally allowed to do in her behalf with the doctor.
you can call your local hospital to see if there is a doctor in the area who specializes in geriatrics.. this could give you a better idea of the availability of a good doc for your mom. a good doctor will make a recommendation about your mom’s care and future.
you can make appointments with the social worker or intake dept at your local nursing homes to find out about their services and to take a tour of the nursing home.
