Question : What neighborhoods, if any, have good schools and decent houses for < 0k within commute distance to D.C.?
We’re considering relocationg for a job in Arlington, VA. We have a 5th grader in the GATE program for gifted and academically talented students, and want to find schools at least as good as the ones we’d be leaving. We’re unsure how to identify homes for sale in the neighborhoods where those schools are located.
All help welcome — except premature contacts from realtors. We’re exploring our options, but would rent for quite a while before buying.
My question is based on the assumption that students can only attend their neighborhood schools. If this is incorrect, what are the criteria for being able to enroll at the identified “best” schools? Thanks, everybody, for the help.

North Arlington, the city of Falls Church, the McLean/Falls Curch areas of Fairfax county.
Homes under $ 700K are rare. Expect either a modest townhome or a 1950′s rambler on a small lot in these areas for that price — and a competetive bidding war for the sale.

i know all the tips on staging a home however my friend is very reluctant to paint. every room is a different color whether it be lime green, deep red, aqua blue, white.We have staged the house with furniture/space,light, removing personal items/pictures,accessorized in odd numbers etc. it is a beautiful home and quite large and expensive trendy appliances, great part of town but i fear the paint choices will deter buyers. it is a very bright home. any tips to help with this or how to work through it. also its not just paint- she has red couches in a bright yellow and green living room. please help!
we need to take pictures because agents are touring the house tomorrow. so quick fix answers hurry and other tips will be appreciated in the long haul

Go out and purchase off white slip covers for all the furnishings..dining chairs. Neutral furnishings/covers in every room will tone down the vivid colours somewhat, but she should have listened and painted neutral to make a bigger profit on her home.

I am help plan a July 2011 family reunion, comprising mainly of 20- and 30-somethings with children ranging from 8 yrs to 6 mos old. But we don’t know in which area of the island to start searching for rental properties.

Both areas are nice, but offer different features or amenities. Palmetto Dunes is a gated community – meaning you need a car pass in order to enter. There are a number of villa or condo complexes all located along the beach and will probably offer the best selection if you chose to have each family in their own 2 -3 bedroom villa or condo. There are also a couple of hotels with restaurants, a general store for some food items, a tennis club and golf courses. Palmetto Dunes is also located across the way from the Shelter Cove Marina which has a number of restaurants and shops.
Forest Beach is a more active part of the Island. There are a number of homes and villa/condo complexes located along the beach. There is also Coligny Plaza – a large open air shopping mall with over 70 shops and restaurants. Forest Beach is also where the main Public Beach access is at Coligny Park. There is a water fountain the kids can run through, restrooms and beach showers. Basically everything is within walking distance – including a grocery store.
