historic community Gruene, Texas, was founded by German immigrant Ernst and Antoinette Gruene in 1849. The Gruene family, including her son moved to New Braunfels in 1845, but land is scarce, so Ernst Gruene moved with his family after the river and built them a house in the German style of truss, and the city began Gruen’s career.

The Gruene family planted cotton on their land, and some years later, twenty to thirty more families arrived in Gruene, helped on the farm fields and build houses for their families. The settlers built homes in a variety of styles, brick buildings, including wooden frame homes, Victorian cottages, and large.
