Which of these Mexican cities would be best to go to on a family vacation?
Question : Which of these Mexican cities would be best to go to on a family vacation?
Me and my two daughters, (14 and 17) are planning on going on a mexican vacation this spring break. We are considering a few places: Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos or the Mayan Rivera. Which one of these cities is best for a family vacation? We are looking for a city with lots of attractions and fun things to do. Also, I’m looking for any good resorts in these areas. Thank you!

I’ve never been to the Mayan Riviera, but my cousin went on her honeymoon there a couple years ago. Manzanillo is a very industrial port town. There are some nice all-inclusive resorts along the ocean front there (the movie ’10′ was filmed there back in the late 1970s). But, if you get away from the resort itself, it’s kind of a bustling urban and industrial area.
Puerto Vallarta is nice. There are actually two parts of it, Puerto Vallarta to the south (near downtown) and Nuevo Vallarta to the north. Nuevo Vallarta is full of mega resorts, kind of like what you would expect in Manzanillo. It’s a long cab ride (20 – 30 minutes?) from downtown Puerto Vallarta and the airport. It’s actually in another state (PV is in Sinaloa and NV is in Jalisco). So, getting cabs to go across the state line can sometimes be problematic. Unless you plan on staying at the resort all the time and going all-inclusive, I would recommend something south of downtown Puerto Vallarta.
Los Cabos is made up of two cities: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo (cabo means “the end”). Cabo SL is the place that’s most popular, busy, and bustling with mega resorts and tourists. Although shopping is very close by and it’s very convenient to go into town (the resorts are in a row along the beach southeast of town). SJ del Cabo is a smaller town, although it’s closer to the airport. And, it has less going on than Cabo SL. And, in between the two (about a 25 mile stretch) are secluded resorts dotting the coastline.
If you go to Cabo, I recommend you stay at one of the mega resorts I mentioned earlier. The best is probably Pueblo Bonito (Rose or Blanco). These are sister resorts and they’re affiliated with Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, which is on the Pacific side of the peninsula (Blanco and Rose are on the Sea of Cortez side). And, they offer free shuttles to and from the properties for all guests of the resort. Sunset Beach is a very nice and exclusive resort. But, the Pacific beaches are steep and rough (waves big and they close out). So, you can’t really go in the water there. You can in the Sea of Cortez, but you’ll likely just want to hang out on the resort grounds and by their pools.
From what I understand, the Mayan Riviera is a lot like the resort district in Cabo SL along the Sea of Cortez. It’s also in a unique location, in that it’s along the Caribbean, which offers crystal blue waters, white sand beaches, great snorkeling, etc. And, if you feel like touring Mexican ruins, it’s close enough to places like Chichen Itza for a day tour.

The Mayan Riviera is the only one that is located on the Caribbean side. I much prefer the Caribbean to the Pacific side. The water is so much warmer and it’s that beautiful turquoise blue. On the Pacific side, it’s rough and cold.
Stay in Playa del Carmen (fly to Cancun, PDC is 40 minutes south), You don’t mention if you want an AI or not. I put a link to the Riu AI (very nice, kid friendly) and to a really nice condo complex. I personally prefer the condo because you have a kitchen to stock with all the things that teenagers like, they can sleep late, and you can still be up in the living room or on the deck. Check out the webcams on the condo site. What a great beach and pool! The nice thing about this condo is it is really close to downtown, so you don’t need to worry about a car or Taxis. Plus, it’s in the gated community of Playacar with 24 hour security.
For things to do: Try Xcaret, Xplor, Tulum, Chichen Itza, take the ferry to Cozumel. I put links for you to look at. 5th Avenue in PDC is a really fun area for shopping and restaurants.
Hope you have fun. You will love the area. - Comment Feed for this Post

Manzanillo would be the best place for a family vacation. Its a small city with beautiful beaches. The other places you listed are more party destinations and depending when you go, you could be in for a real treat. Spring break time in los cabos, mayan riviera is pretty much young adults drinking to no end. Manzanillo is a very nice place. It is m,ore family oriented and is not a “party destination”.
