Anyone been to Cape Town South Africa?
Question : Anyone been to Cape Town South Africa?
I am in the process of applying for an internship in South Africa (Cape Town) doing sustainable development, urban planning, housing/homelessness projects. I was wondering if anyone has been to Cape Town and can give me a feel of the social enviornment there. I am not white. I am Filipino and Japanese, will I stand out in a bad way? Is racism prevalent there? Is it safe? Anything about the area is great information.
Also, another more general question. Have you studied abroad, and was it worth the money? This will end up costing me around 4 thousand dollars for 3 months. Which is actually pretty cheap compared to other programs.

Yes I have been in South Africa for 30 Years, I stayed in Cape Town for 7 years and no you wont stand out because it is a mixture of culture, racism is every were in the world. It depends on the area were you going to help, the townships there is dangerous only if you go in at night. The people in Cape Town is very friendly. oops I almost forgot the beach in Blaauburg is vreesing cold.

Hi there. I can tell you that the people in Cape Town are quite laid back and chilled. There should be no issue with racism if you go there! There are tourists in Cape Town all the time and there have not been any racial issues against them! You should not stand out at all, and I personally think you will like Cape Town alot! Good luck!

Cape Town is the most cosmopolitan city in SA. You won’t “stick out”.
The locals you work with will be able to advise you about personal safety, just like any large city it has parts you should rather avoid. Don’t go wandering alone around dodgy areas, though from your field of work you would probably be exposed to the worst it has to offer by way of the “informal settlements”.

Lived there for two years, and spent lots of holidays, there and would go back in a blink. You won’t stand out at all. The most beautiful place. And Ive lived in a lot of countries, SA is my country of birth, I was raised there. Go and enjoy it. You will love it.
