We got half way threw algebra and stopped, I don’t want math to be something she hates.

Hire a tutor. If she’s home schooled and struggling, maybe it’s the teacher. No offense or anything. I’m just saying… there are no other kids in her class to be distracting her. Maybe math isn’t your strong point, as far as being able to teach her.

Board games. Monopoly: hand out 3-5 random title cards at beginning to speed game along. Multiply/divide/subtract die instead of adding. Put aside the “ones”; round up or down all penalties/payouts. Dominoes: learn mexican train, or also called train. Cooking: measurements. Quiz EACH OTHER: show that you enjoy math, also…say: “3 seconds to answer the following…19 x3….quick now!”. try not to use a calculator unless checking after you add in head or on paper. set an example. let her tutor younger child and bring fun back into it. I like to line up 10 things, tell them to close their eyes, remove some, and when they open their eyes tell me as quick as they can, how many left, or how many I have removed.

I’m 17 and I had a lot of trouble with algebra in 8th grade & a little trouble with Alg2 in 10th. My problem was the teacher, this year I’m taking Adv.Alg2/Trig and the teacher is great. I understand the material minutes after hes done teaching. Perhaps the way you are teaching it is the problem(no offense). Hire a tutor or have a friend who is good in math help her out.
Some people just struggle with math, it will eventually click for her, as it did for me.

Not to say your a bad teacher, but maybe getting her a tutor is a good idea. In my experience (I’m 14 in Geometry) the person you learn from makes the difference. Algebra was my favorite math subject
the way you explain the math problem also makes the difference. The style you teach math may not be something she understands completely and other kids may understand you just right. - Comment Feed for this Post

I suggest trying Bison Educational Systems. This is a site that has questions and answers in all subjects and grades. It is a great resource to use to help prepare your child for the state proficiency testing. I am thinking you may be able to give her a test and see specifically what areas in math she is struggling with. Then you will be able to see specifically what lessons to teach her.
