Question : I seem to not find success in the employment world. I feel I have tried all and get no where. Please help!?
I cannot hold a job for more than a month or 3 months maximum since my last 5year long term employer. I don’t get fired, just laid off. I cannot stand this anymore and it is making me feel like a looser, as if I am doing something wrong. It does not look good when it looks like I am a job hopper. That is the last thing I wanted to show on my resume. I am currently going to college as a criminal justice major. The jobs I have held in the past were retail, restaurants, and property management. The property management position was my longest career. Ever since, is where I feel cursed. As if I am not destined to find a long term career anymore. I feel lost and do not even know where I fit now. I do not even know where to look in my job search now. I am almost afraid to try again to find I get rejected or not have the job long. I am a sweet person, easy to get along with, a very hard worker, and loyal to any employer that comes along my way. I also train very fast compared to others in training. Basically, anything thrown in front of me to learn, I learn easily.
Any suggestions? Should I try a career counselor? If so, how do I go about finding one?
Thanks to all of you and your responses! I’m grateful to know I’m not the only one experiencing this. You all provided encouragement too. Sounds like this employment world is not as easy as it used to be. It is much tougher now, but it cannot be like this forever. I just have to keep my faith, keep looking, and will find myself some where working some day soon.

I went through a spell like that when I was in my early 20s. I got laid off three times in a row by businesses that were failing. I didn’t know they were failing when I took the job.
If you are doing everything right, then you shouldn’t feel like a loser. Since you are in school, you will have fewer choices than those who are not in school. DO NOT QUIT SCHOOL. Most employers will be a bit more understanding of your “job hopping” since you were in school. Also, when they call to verify that you were employed with those other businesses, they might tell them that you were not fired. It just depends on the business, some give out more information than others.
Do you live in an area with a very poor economy? Are the businesses that lay you off reducing the number of employees, closing the business, or what reason are they giving you?
Are there jobs on the campus of the school that you attend? I worked on campus when I was in college. It was very convenient and there were many employment opportunities for students. Have you tried stores like local grocery stores, Target, Walmart, home improvement stores, Dollar stores?
I don’t know if this is much help to you, but just keeping looking and don’t give up or feel bad about yourself.
listen to these other answerers, they are right it is hard gfor llots of people including you and i. especially in bad economy businesse take advantage of people and sometimes they prefer a butt kisser over a hardworker. sometimes they just cant afford to keep good workers, sometimes you are too good for a company and those places are not where you are suppossed to be. i have the same problem of looking like a job hopper. when i was in college i held jobs for a long time, but they were on campus and i needed to make more money to pay for school. i have done restaurants and now retail, and those are really crappy places to work, but they are easy jobs to get and i had to do it to pay the bills.i have realized through my experiences that i am a valuable employee and i need an employer that sees me as valuable, and not just another number, i need an employer that respects people and doesnt treat themas puppets that can be manipulated. i have had a hard time with jobs because of depression of where i am in life, but i take these experiences as learning experiences. you are not your job, you are not necessarily your reputation. you are more than your resume. if you want to show that u can last somewhere fora long time try volunteering while you work and go to school. im sure there are places that would appreciate your help. even if its just once a week or once every two weeks, if you can stay at least six months, you can put that on a resume. re are lots of places that need volunteer cashiers volunteers to answer phones or do secretarial work, lots of things you may not even think of. you could even volunteer at a place that has to do with your major. anyway dont lose hope, this type of thing actually happens to alot fo people, they go through a rough patch but they keep pushing and eventually the tide turns. since you are in school definitely check out there career center, get help with your resume and use all the resources they offer. good luck you do sound like an employee worth having.
