Could I have a foundation problem?
Question : Could I have a foundation problem?
i purchased my home roughly 4 months ago, and during that time the inspector found only minor problems with the house (mostly cosmetic except for needing a new roof). Upon going upstairs this weekend, I noticed a crack in one of the walls and found out one of the upstairs bedroom doors are sticking. Now I’m terrified we have foundation issues.
Will homeowners insurance or our warranty help cover this? Can there be any legal disputing with our inspector?
We never would have agreed to cover the cost on foundation problems for this home, and now I’m terrified we’ve landed in a bad situation. Any advise will help. Thanks.
thanks Gudy, we did have a plumber, roofer, and HVAC person out in addition to our inspector. Next time we’ll know to also have someone check out the foundation and trees (we found out the large oak in the front was dead once sprint hit)

All houses settle at some point. If your house has been there like 50 years, chances are it is not going move much. Is the crack wider than 1/8 of an inch. If it is not I would not worry much. You can also look at the foundation. If your house is on cement platform, do you see crack along the floor. If you see long wide cracks along the floor and wall, than yes you do have foundation problem.

home inspectors are usually very insulated from lawsuits and usually very low on actual construction experience. because most inspections are just visual and not in depth (taking covers off or things apart) a lot of things can get missed. check your warrantee and either get a very good carpenter or structural engineer and see what your problem is before panicking.
this maybe advice a little late but next time spend the extra cash and time and bring in several trades (carpenter, plumber, electrician, and HVAC) to inspect a house. they will see things that inspectors will miss especially if there has been a lot of work done on the house (remodels additions etc)
