As well as public housing, why doesn’t the government provide public office space for new small businesses?
Question : As well as public housing, why doesn’t the government provide public office space for new small businesses?
First off, I know lots of people think tax dollars are being “wasted” on public housing. Why doesn’t the government have public office space, where people who actually have business ideas, but cannot afford to pay high rents to get going, can start and maintain a business for a short-term (6 months to a year) to help “poorer” people get a business going. This would be a more practical use of some of the housing money, since it would help the economy as well as pull some out of poverty. Good idea? discuss.

People need shelter in order to live– you don’t HAVE to have an office to survive.

Brilliant your idea that the goverment should own the offices of people starting out in business! Why stop there? Those of us trying to earn a living would be happy to have the state own all our land. Not to mention providing us with occaisonal food and water. Taxes are no burden at all and we are grateful for anything that our rulers deign to offer us in return.
High taxation is a certain cure for poverty, as you say! -

Dude, their are no wealthy entrepreneurs ! These are the people who are willing to take risk, finance their own enterprise, and take pride in knowing they did it with no help from the government.
What you are suggesting is already in play. it’s called set-aside. it’s designed for women and other minorities. These are not real entrepreneurs, these are parasites who have found a way to get tax dollars to fund their enterprise and get the government to hand the enterprise to them.
Real business can bid on the set aside project, city government encourages them to do so. They never get the business because it’s already earmarked for some minority parasite, but it looks good for the government agency to be able to show competitive bids from people and companies that submitted bids, but really had no chance in hell of getting the business.
Real entrepreneurs wouldn’t think of taking this deal, because then they become obligated to city government for political contributions, etc.

Although it seems like a good idea, I do think of the fact that it takes a lot of money to start any kind of business, and it takes at least 2 years if the business lasts to start seeing money come back in as covering costs, let a lone a profit. Helping small businesses start would use not a little, or some, but a lot of housing money. There may also be a problem with monitoring the businesses to make sure they are doing everything by the books, that means hiring more public employees to evaluate and monitor those businesses. There may also have to be restrictions and controversies as to what “type” of businesses the government would be helping with. I understand that it is difficult to get a business going, and it would be nice to help those people out, however this may be a bigger undertaking by the government than what you state above.
These things are just a few to think about, I’m not stating my opinion against or for what you introduced. These are just some of the things that would have to be considered.

I would be quite angry if the government started doing that. You know that they’d never actually cut the number of government housing units in order to do this instead, so it’d have to be in addition to that. There is a huge difference between providing a place to live, and providing a place to start a business. I think it’s appropriate that if someone wants to start their own business, they should start out by working for someone else, scrimping and saving in order to start their own place. If they can’t put in the effort and dedication needed to accomplish that, then they’d have no chance to succeed in their own business.

Well the gov. probably would offer sm. business loans,,,,,,if one could incorporate proof of several things
1- Number of sm. children
2- Race
a) Proof of being Latino, Mexican, black, hispanic, Asian, etc. etc.
3- Show proof of potiential growth expected, for the first yr. and document those facts.
4) Location,,,,, and showing proof as to why its the perfect local….
5) Population growth, to support your business
6) Statement reflecting overhead costs,,,, Example: Phone lines, internet accessable, disabled parking, light bill, heat bill,
7) Proof of business licenses and well as proof of insurance and property damage
There are lots of things the gov. has to take under consideration….for small business loans,,,,or grants,,,,,,, or if you can prove its a research project and you want a grant vs. loan….and know how to write all that up properly and faxing it to them. The gov. don’t usually deal out $ $ $ for a business that is only planning on being in business for a year or less. By small business they see it as a “Long Term Business” who may only make a small yeild of say 10 to 30 thousand per year…..and if that’s the case they’ll likely not approve it. But if one goes in with the idea of a potiential earning base of say 100 to 500 thousand $ $ $ per year, with low over head expenses, and shows proof of those findings ,,,, with proper indorsements showing proof of insurance, and employee 401-K plans, employee insentives, and medical insurance, etc…. all those types of things….. then yeah, they are more likely to be of help……. And also, the biggest help is to not be of the “White” race.
Because we are being fazed out. And
