Company paying relocation to WI…?
Question : Company paying relocation to WI…?
I have interviewed with a great company in Wisconsin. HR says that they will help pay for relocation from Indiana. Never having needed to relocate in the US, I am unsure how much a move will cost or if they are offering enough. I have a modest sized home (1500sqft), two kids, and a dog to move. They are offering only $ 500 cash, $ 1000 with quotes and documentation, or money to be taken from my pay and written into my employment contract.
Does this sound reasonable? I think it seems low. I need some info and advice before I hear back from them next week.
Generally their basic offers are higher than what I am receiving in Indiana (50-65 vs 40-45), but our home is not in a state to be sold (renovating an old victorian). And as I am just getting out of grad school I have no money to pay for my own relocation.

I have moved quite a few times through transfers and this sounds incredibly low. Also, you are taxed on that as income.

They are definitely low-balling you, but you should do some homework before calling back to negotiate.
First, decide whether you’re even capable of doing the move on your own w/ the kids and pet, or whether you need movers. Are you able to carry furniture and pack up and unpack a truck?
If you decide that you can do it on your own, get an estimate for doing it on your own:
— Truck rental fee + mileage (plug the start/end spots into Google Maps or Mapquest for mileage)
— Cost of any packaging that you need to buy (e.g. boxes or a TV crate)
— Gas & tolls
— Any interim housing required (where will you stay while you search for a place to live?)
— Cost to turn on everything at the new place — cable, telephone, gas, etc.
— Any real estate agent fees in WI.Once you start doing the math, you’ll be able to decide what you can afford and what additional assistance you’ll need.
BTW, movers cost at least several thousand dollars for a state to state move. Without calling for an estimate, my best guess would be $ 2.5 – 3K. We paid movers $ 600 in Oct for a 35 mile move in NJ with ~8 pieces of furniture.
Good luck!

I worked at a company in HR where they also offered low amounts for relocation assistance. The idea is that they will offer this amount to help with the ACTUAL move, meaning the cost to transport or store some of your belongings. This could reasonably cost $ 500-$ 1000. However, they will not buy your house, or sell your house, or pay for an apartment while your house is on the market. This is quite common depending on the level of the position you were hired for. This also follows IRS guidelines. Now, if you were hired for a top-level executive position (making over 6 figures), then this would be considered low.
I know this is probably not what you wanted to hear, but I hope it helps. It certaintly won’t hurt you to ask them for more. Sometimes they can offer more assistance and sometimes they can’t. It just depends.
I hope all goes well for you. Good luck!
