I want to vacation in New Orleans the first week in aug 2009 but I am wondering if that is hurricane season?

My friend and I would like to vacation there but I am concerned about the weather around that time. Is that hurricane season and what will the temperature be like? Also what is the best hotel to stay at in the French Quarters that is 3 or 4 stars?

hurricane season last from june to december! they do not pop up over night so you will have plenty of time to leave if one developes… just google the hotels and decide what you want…..

Hurricanes don’t come exclusively in August; hurricane season lasts from June to October so a storm can form any time within that period. You will know when a hurricane is coming because they’re tracked way in advance.
The temperature will be very, very hot, so bring lots of water and sunscreen if you will be walking around a lot. It also may rain in the middle of the day due to the high temperatures and humidity, so make sure you bring a poncho or umbrella. The showers are usually small and pass over within an hour, though.
Go to http://www.tripadvisor.com to find information about hotels in the French Quarter. There are many nice hotels to choose from, so go there and see which one you like the best. The Harrah’s is an awesome hotel and the rooms have great views because it’s right across the street from the river.

i live in southern mississippi and like to stay in new orleans a lot. i stayed there few days during august of last year and had a great time. you will be there during hurricane season and it will be very hot, as others have mentioned, but you can track storms for many days or even weeks ahead (though they are subject to changing course on occasion). you should be able to get a very good deal on a swanky hotel that time of year.. last august my girlfriend and i stayed at the intercontinental (4/5 star) for like $ 45 a night. that place will run you like $ 250 – $ 300 most of the time. i typicaly use hotwire for my hotel rooms. you get the star rating and location of the hotel but they don’t tell you which one it is until you book it. you end up saving a lot of money this way.
i think my favorite hotel in new orleans is the international house. it’s maybe 2 blocks from the quarter and it’s an amazing place. places like hotel monteleone and the royal sonesta are nice but the international house is more current – hip – stylish – ect…

It will be hot and humid. Hurricanes normally don’t come that early.
I wouldn’t stay in a 3 start Hotel anywhere near the French Quarters. If you are trying to save money, use Priceline. Hotels in the Quarters are not cheap. You get what you pay for. Go for the Hilton near the River on priceline start your bid at $ 60. If this is too expensive. Find somewhere in Metairie which is very close to the city. -

Hurricane season lasts from June 1-November 30. Based on the past, the pinnacle of hurricane season is mid August to late September…that’s usually when our hardest storms hit if we are bound to get one. Therefore, your trip could be cut short if a storm were to head our way…
As for the weather, pack shorts and tank tops, because it’s going to be hot and humid!
With hotels, the Royal Sonesta and the Hotel Monteleone are my personal favorites. I have also enjoyed spending a weekend at the W hotel.
Despite the heat and potential for storms, you and your friend are going to have a great time capturing the spirit of New Orleans! Laissez le bon temps rouler!

August here is horrible. It’s hot, humid and it’s the height of hurricane season. There is usually the most activity around August because it’s the hottest part of the season before things start to cool down a lot. To be a little more positive. Sense it is hurricane season hotels are usually very cheap. I suggest the Montelone, The Royal Sonesta, and The Ramada Inn on Bourbon. All are nice and n the middle of the action. The city is beautiful and I’m sure you’d have a great time. In the summer you can also eat at some of the better restaurants at lower prices. Come on down just keep in mind your vacation could get cut short.

No one mentioned the out-of-control thug problem around the quarter.Get a room AWAY from Downtown New Orleans,Slidell,Mandeville etc.Weather is Tropical and HOT.There is ample time to leave if a Hurricane is brewing,that is ALL the local TV stations can talk about anyway.I’ve been there,done that,smelled it.The City is run by incompetent idiot Criminals, only badly.Greed and Graft are the norm.Visit,take a lot of pictures,leave a lot of Money and then head for the nearby Beaches!

Yes! I’ve lived in NOLA my entire life. If there’s one thing I would tell any visitors, don’t visit anytime in August!! Our worst hurricanes hit from late july to early september.
The weather will most likely be warm but the intense humidity will make it feel like a sauna.
If you do decided to visit, I would stay near NOLA, but right one the outskirts.
Metairie or Kenner are great and not too far from the Vieux Carre. Since it is hot, the hurricane chances jump up high so you want to be somewhere workable incase of evacuation and not in the Vieux Carre.

Also, who ever suggested to not come in august is wrong. There is some great festivals in august… Go to the Satchmo Festival!!!!!!

Hurricane season is officially from June 1st to November 30th each year, for everywhere. There are general predictions regarding hurricane activity, but the chances of a hurricane striking anywhere in particular are low.

All of the hurricanes that approached New Orleans in the past 50 years did so during the period of late August to mid-September. Of those, only Betsy (1965) and Katrina (2005) actually struck New Orleans.
If you travel >> anywhere < your trip might be cancelled by weather (costing you money) then consider buying trip cancellation insurance. It's sold by travel agents & airlines and is cheap. However, you have to buy it in advance.
New Orleans is hot & humid during August. The good news for August visitors is that summer is low season for tourism and hotels typically offer great rates. Stay somewhere with a nice pool.
There are many hotels in the FQ. Check travel sites like Expedia & Orbitz, and check the hotel sites once you narrow your choices. Go to http://www.frenchquarterhotels.com for some non-chain hotel in the FQ.
The FQ hotels that probably offer the best “New Orleans” experience are the Omni Royal Orleans, the Monteleone, and the Royal Sonesta.

Hurricane season is NOW until October on the Gulf Coast.
Hurricanes are usually tracked for 4-5 days in the gulf. Ample warning.
