Real job, scam, or illegal operation?
Question : Real job, scam, or illegal operation?
I registered on my state’s workforce website to find a job. So far I haven’t had any luck but I am still on there constantly to search for a new job.
Today, I got an email from a company from the UK about a job opportunity. It reads as follows:

As a result of our continuing success and growth we are seeking focused and determined Field Sales Professionals to work within our Corporate Sales Division. This is a solutions based sales role handling both New Business Development and Account Management online from your home. You will be dealing with some of the largest and most prestigious corporate clients within in the Canada and United State. These vacancies are for a new and exciting division. Field Sales Professionals within our sister company; Job site have come to expect outstanding results and are rewarded for excellence in performance, with uncapped and generous remuneration packages. We are offering a basic salary of £1,500 per month.We are presently having problems handling our logistics from America and Canada as well as trying to tackle how our payments are remitted to us back here in United Kingdom. hence, we need to recruit a Book-Keeper/Representative. We will like to know if you wi ll be interested in working online from home and get paid weekly without creating inconvenience to your present job.

We need someone who would be helping in receiving payments from our clients in United States. An agent who is responsible and reliable that will be handling the payment aspect. The ideal candidates will be working in a similar role at present and will be able to display excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Theres a couple things in this email that have me concerned..
1) This company is from a different country
2) It’s a “work at Home” job, which I know there’s a lot of scams that are masked as these.
3) The sentence, “We are presently having problems handling our logistics from America and Canada as well as trying to tackle how our payments are remitted to us back here in United Kingdom. hence, we need to recruit a Book-Keeper/Representative.” sounds like this may be a money laundering operation.
I would like some opinions about this. Do you think it’s a scam and if it is, what should I do about it?

This was featured on 20/20 a few years ago. The company wants you to accept both packages and payments for them, and forward them to an oversees address. What is actually happening is people are using stolen credit cards to purchase items that will be shipped to your address. You are then expected to forward these items to an oversees address at your personal expense, then are given a fake address in which to forward the receipts for a reimbursement that will never happen. Any payments you receive come from people who have been scammed from those emails that say “please accept this money order for $ xxxx, keep your share of the money plus an extra $ xxx for your troubles and forward the rest to our shipping specialist”
In short it is a scam that will involve the F.B.I. showing up at your door and taking you to jail for credit card fraud, and money laundering.

It’s a scam !
“focused and determined Field Sales Professionals to work within our Corporate Sales Division”
That’s veiled language for a commission salesman. No salary, just commission if you sell, nothing if you don’t.
“We are presently having problems handling our logistics from America and Canada as well as trying to tackle how our payments are remitted to us back here in United Kingdom”
Again veiled language to say that you have to pay first for the goods they want you to sell. And if you don’t sell them, you’re stuck with it.
Just look up the ads in your local newspaper. You will find lots of job offers, shorter, but using the same type of language.
They’ll show you that this or that salesman made so much money. But they won’t tell you that 24 out of 25 beginners drop out after a few weeks because they make no money at all. -

Initial thoughts… scam and a rather clever one in the current climate!
Theres a couple things in this email that have me concerned..
1) This company is from a different country
You have no cover if anything goes wrong. I’m trying to think of what they could get out of you from an initial sending of information… I can’t think of any apart from lots of junk email and calls so if you don’t mind risking those then why don’t you see what the next step is. Dont’ hold me to that though!
2) It’s a “work at Home” job, which I know there’s a lot of scams that are masked as these.
Basic salary of £1,500 per month without leaving your home and allowing you to work full time as well…. not really plausible is it! It’s hard enought o find a sales job involving leaving the house that pays that money! lol
3) The sentence, “We are presently having problems handling our logistics from America and Canada as well as trying to tackle how our payments are remitted to us back here in United Kingdom. hence, we need to recruit a Book-Keeper/Representative.” sounds like this may be a money laundering operation.
What company would admit to a potential employee that their business is “having problems” for a start?? I would expect a company that large and paying that amount of money to require a qualified accountant experienced in handling foreign currency transactions.
So there we go. If you want to send them your details and see what happens I’d be interested to see what happens next but in my honest opinion I would be wary of how they could use the information they’ve requested and I wouldn’t do it!

I read the whole description and from what I see this sounds legit.
If you are serious about following through with this you should contact the Chamber of Commerce of the country where their operation originates and ask for references or past experience with them.
Under no circumstances reveal any private account information unless for your weekly pay, do not conduct any business through your own bank account and make sure they set up accounts for you to work with. Do not lend your SSN or name for opening such accounts, and if you are asked to deal with banks in their name do just that – deal with banks in their name, not yours.

Pole Kitten’s response is right on. There’s too many gaps in their story especially about being a work at home position. It’s a scam.
