Question : What are resources for condos / senior citizens when building manager says recycling is too costly?
My grandmother (in her early 80s) lives not in assisted living but in a very active senior condo building in Bergen Co. New Jersey. She mentions to me how guilty she feels not recycling but when they’ve asked about recycling they’re told it is too expensive to implement in the buildings.
Bergen County’s solid waste website has a few publications re: recycling in businesses, hazardous waste disposal, and composting. I’m wondering (since I don’t live near my grandmother) if there might be encouraging ideas such as collecting just newspapers or other specific items, or working with a local school to have the recycling collected, or some other creative and easy to implement idea?
My only other thought is to call the town’s recycling coordinator to see what ideas/resources they may have or have previously used.

The monthly condo fee should cover things like recycling.
The tenants should get together and question the condo association about how and where their fees are being spent.

If the city has not passed a law requiring recycling it is voluntery. In a condo the building manager can have an opinion but unless he owns a condo there he has no vote.
The condo association has a board and they decide what is too expensive or not. She should run for board get elected propose recycling and get the rest of the board to vote for it. Then they will recycle. - Comment Feed for this Post
I ran across this problem when trying to get a recycling program started at the school ~ curbside recycling for residential homes is free, but for businesses, it can be incredibly expensive.
You might start by calling Public Works at City Hall, and find out what free recycling programs are available for a senior citizens home.
I’d even suggest calling a boy scout or girl scout group to see if they would tackle collection as a special project with a fund raising component. Let them coordinate the program and keep the revenues from the newspaper, aluminum, and cardboard.
