Question : Should we go with the builder or a contractor (after home is built) to do the floors in our new home?
We are considering 18″ x 18″ diagonally laid travertine (stone) tile for the first floor and bathrooms, and carpet for the stairs, upstairs hallway, and bedrooms.

He will probably hire the same guy you would. If the price is in line- let him do it , you get to layers of reponsiblity that way- The builder and the Sub-
you should hire a contractor . the builder will do the same ,he will just be a middle man to have to pay.i am a painting contractor myself and thats how it works.hope this helps
