Question : If a home I was renting burned. No cause has been determined can I get my security deposit back?
The owner did have fire insurance. I live in Pennsylvania and had been living at the property for a year.

I’m with Mrs. Frank – hope you had renter’s insurance.
You don’t mention if the house is uninhabitable. If so your lease would be voided since the owner cannot provide the property for you to live in.
If the fire was not your fault and they are sure of that you should get your security deposit.
However I suspect the owner is holding onto the deposit because they suspect you had something to do with the fire.
If you have spoken to the owner you should have some idea of where you stand. -

If the investigation is still on going you probably want get the deposit back just yet. If it is determined to be no fault of yours then you will get it back, if it’s determined you are at fault then the owner can sue you. Did you have renters insurance? Hope you did if not then you will be out of all your possessions.

the fire department should have determined the cause, it’s hard to believe they couldn’t/didn’t. No matter, that’s the key to getting your deposit back, i take it you had no renters insurance? bummer. have you talked to your landlord? that should be your first action, then the fire department.
