There’s really not much you can do in terms to screening someone though. Like what do you do? Ask for the contact number of a previous landlord and ask “so… any nasty women brought into the building lately?” Lol.
This situation really just proves that asking for the rent payment in advance is really important. BTW, he never did show up to get his ‘stuff’ and $76 cheque

Record your first encounter with rentersJIC .You need to show police a pix of that person that left he is known by the cops when he shows up you tell him that the police wanted his statement in person ask him to go to the precinct to give a statement this is enough to keep him from bucking up when you tell him he is no longer able to rent. I use to manage an apartment complex in Biloxi MS we had to run off prostitutes drug dealers until they realized not here buster.

Yo uneed to do the credit check thing bc it gives you a leg to stand on. You don’t want them to be able to show up in court with a charge of discrimination or anything else make them provide the ammunition you will need to make a decision. ITs too late you already told them you are the owner but that is the worse thing you can do if you could claim parents own then you can defer alldecisions to the association granted you are the final word but this allows plausible denialbility.

Wow, you used to rent real estate too? Thanks for your insight. Allegedly the old roommate is now claiming he’s going to Japan all of the sudden. So weird.
Anyways, the good thing is that I retained most of his initial rent payment and now the room is already taken by another man: a 59-year old student who plays the Mandolin. This should prove to be interesting

Apparently I could join the ‘renter’s association” of Saskatchewan and be able to have access to a tenant database. The likelihood of being taken to court over discrimination is very low though because these are roommates of mine, so I have the ability to pick and choose who I want to live with. They’re not in a separate private living space. Disliking people is not discrimination.

It’s pretty hard to do though. Past experiences with previous landlords aren’t always good indicators. It’s actually one thing I’ve learned about renting real estate – if a person things that he/she can judge that a roommate’s character, they need to find another job!
Some of the most promising roommates have turned out to be lousy while some of the sketchiest ones have turned out to be great. Right now the only pre-qualifications to live here is a) don’t wreck the place & b) pay the rent!

That was scary. Landon, you need to screen these people before you let them live there. This renting thing does not seem so great now. That is too much drama. Please be careful.
