Question : I did a visual inspection for mold in my basement but I couldn’t find anything, could there still be mold?
I just finished searching my basement for mold, and I couldn’t find any. I did this because I would sometimes get a headache when I went into the basement and my nose would almost always start to run. The air in my basement is cold and seemingly dry, so it could have just been because of this.
Do you think there could be mold hidden in the basement (the walls are brick and the floor is cement)

I don’t think it’s likely at all that mold is growing on brick or concrete. Mold typically grows on something with cellulose in it or other organic materials. If you’re still concerned, you could always use one of the test kits, but it sounds to me like you’ve made a good inspection, and your basement isn’t built of materials known to support mold anyway.

According to scientists who study mold, it can be found virtually everywhere; both indoors and outside. Your basement almost certainly has mold which has not yet bloomed because conditions are not ideal; yet. Keep the humidity between 40% – 60% to retard the mold growth and do not put carpet in the basement. Some people are extremely sensitive to all stages of mold; from invisible spores to full bloom. It appears you are one of the unlucky persons who are especially impacted by mold. Washing all surfaces with a bleach solution will kill any present mold. In time it will reappear and need to be washed again. Let your running nose tell you when it comes back. Good luck. Information gleaned from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you had mold, it would be very visible. Get a humistat to read you humidity level. If it is dry as you say, then there should be no mold. Mold needs a food source, and that is moisture and darkness. Mold will grow on anything, if you find that you have high humidity levels, then you need to use a dehumidifier and possibly bleach down all the walls to kill any mold. I don’t believe that you will need to do this step, but it would be necessary if there is mold.

Basements are notoroious for toxic mold havens. And toxic mold absolutely causes headaches. and toxic mold is often hard to spot. check behind all furniture. was there a previous leak? mold spores could possibly still be there. underneath carpet did you check?
