Turkey: Jewish Community Under Pressure | European Journal
jewish retirement communities
Jewish communities in the Middle East have contracted dramatically in recent decades – apart from a small community in Teheran and a larger one in Turkey, which is well integrated into the Muslim country.500 years ago,Sephardic Jews fled the Spanish Inquisition and settled in the Ottoman Empire. Today, the community numbers some 26000 members. It still publishes its own newspaper, called Shalom ,runs a hospital,a retirement home and a dozen synagogues. Traditionally,Turkey has been among Israel’s allies, but the fighting in Gaza has put a severe strain on the relationship. Istanbul’s Jewish community is feeling the tension.

i don’t get how the jewish community is under pressure in turkey, the public says it’s no problem that a turk is a jew and we dont hate them in general. Jew, Christian, Muslim doesn’t matter in Turkey. Turk is turk, we don’t say Islam is the official religion. WE were the ones who respected and tolerated jews for centuries and let them live in peace and freedom at a time where whole christian Europe hated them.

I dont believe there is an apparent pressure on Turkish Jews but the provocation are more than ever and I am afraid if the view that changed to Israel on the minds of Turkish people would change to Jewish citizens of Turkey too..But it seems far away since many Turkish people clearly state that they always have good relations with their Jewish neighbours and what they dont approve is Israel’s approach to people in Gaza.

you’re an idiot, a country doesn’t represent a religious basis..it’s a representation of a nationality, in fact Israel wasn’t even established by practicing jews… There are Muslim and Christian majorities in various countries but this has been the case for centuries now.. Israel is a fairly recent state and it looks at recruiting jews just jews as if they’re a race. Judaism isn’t a race, it’s a religion.. these people aren’t from that region!

Ottoman Jews! I hope you all would come back in our country to live in peace here again…. This is your country, too! Jews from Turkey, you are always welcome! - Comment Feed for this Post
