Question : Are Dell notebooks reliable? How many years of warranty should I get?
I hear a lot of bad things about notebooks, like the cd-rom drive doesn’t work anymore or that the screen’s brightness is messed up, or even that the new battery lasts only 15 minutes when charged.
So, are dell notebooks reliable? Should I get the at-home warranty or mail-in also the 1 or 3 year warranty?

I recently bought a Dell notebook and I love it. I have not had any problems with the new battery. It lasts about 5 hours. I purchased the 3 year warranty and I have no doubt that it will pay for itself in the long run. I am in graduate school and use mine daily. I take it with me to school every day. And I also have two children who like to play on it. Accidents will happen and my warranty will cover it.
My parents drive a truck and they have a Dell notebook that they use for logs, paying bills, etc… They have had theirs for 4 years. It has been dropped, coffee has been spilled on it, and a number of other things. Each time Dell sent a technician to their home and replaced/fixed whatever problem they were having. I think everything has been replaced except the screen. And the 3 year warranty paid for every cent. Amazingly, it is still going strong.
I would get the at-home warranty.

First of all, laptops are expensive to replace. That said, it is probably in your best interests to purchase a 3-year warranty. If anything (and I mean anything at all) goes wrong in the 2nd or 3rd year and you only purchased a 1-year warranty, you will pay significantly more than if you just purchased the 3-year to begin with.
As for mail-in or at-home warranty, it depends on how quickly you would need the laptop fixed. It’s nice to have on-site service because it tends to be faster and more convenient. However, if you don’t mind being without your laptop for a week or two, you can save a couple bucks by choosing mail-in service.
Dell notebooks have a decent reputation; HP/Compaq slightly edges them out.

Dell come with 1 yr warranty. If you buy with credit card like MC,
Visa,or American Express, you get additional 1 yr coverage from you credit card company, so I say you don’t have to spend more money to buy the warranty for your coverage. Dell should last at least 4 to more yrs. it you don’t abusive.
