Question : I feel I am stuck in a career field that I hate! (help me get out!)?
First off… BIG MISTAKE… I did not graduate High School. Never got a G.E.D but I need to. On applications I leave the field on the application where it says “did you graduate” blank! No employer has ever caught it when I leave it blank! so its not really a lie… they just ASSUME that I graduated!
My job history consists of:
-Hospitality industry
-Property Management
-Retail! (when I was real young)
I currently do property management. I am a leasing consultant for an apartment community and I want OUT of this business SO BAD! I hate it. I hate coming to work… put it this way: I hate everything about it! I am only there because the pay is decent and I dont know how to get into something else that interests me WITHOUT experience! for example:
on craigslist, I was looking into being a hospital secretary or a secretary at a Doctors office and all of the adds said “must have __ experience in hospital atmosphere”
Or an insurance agent- HOW do you get into that? im in a RUT

You could try working through a temporary employment agency that specializes in fields of employment you’d like to get into to gain that experience, then try to go for entry level jobs in the field of choice. You could also take some courses as well at your local community college.

Sorry to say, but you have to go to school. That or get really lucky and break into a field by sending out a thousand resumes and hoping someone who interviews you likes you.
But I think the school route is the best for many reasons. 1st, you get the education you need so you get your foot in the door easily. A friend of mine spend 1.5 years sending out resumes to get the job in the field he wants. It’s still not his ideal job, but at least he’s doing what he loves now. 2nd, getting training can take just as long as sending out resumes. Now this doesn’t mean you have to go get your BA, but you can get some vocational skills, like becoming a surgical tech or something you’re interested in in about 2 years. Why waste time sending out resumes when you can just get the training you need anyway? 3rd, once you get that training, not having you’re GED won’t matter as much.
But I feel ya! I used to work in both retail and property management. Both stupid at times. Figure out what you’re interested in, and then start asking (even posting here) what education you need to get those jobs.

Insurance agents get paid by commission, and from others I’ve spoke to, you really have to be convincing of the policies you are selling.
And after some experience in this field, you may look into being a claims adjuster.Not really sure about on-line courses and how they work, but what about being a medical transcriptionist?
