I agree w/ the others. I love Austin for a million reasons but traffic and cost of living are what has kept me away. A house identical to mine would cost almost twice as much there. My mom drives there to work, there’s NO way I could do that. I grew up in a small town so I have a hard time comprehending spending an hour or more a day in traffic. That’s a lot of wasted time in your short life! (Of course for those who are used to it, it’s no big deal.)

i agree with a previous poster, with a 10 year old pflugerville or round rock would be the best places to look into. you will be in a more suburban-like area with all the conveniences of austin right around the corner. plus, the rent will be a bit less. you can find cheap rent in austin, the question is whether you want to live in that area. all things considered, austin and the surrounding towns arent that large. but altogether they provide lots of opportunities to meet new people, get involved in activities around town, and some fun outdoor activities. you should definately go check it out before moving and see for yourself. traffic is pretty bad, so take that in to account when you pick where you live and how far you have to go to work. also, check out local school on greatschools.net for more info on where your kid would be going. the weather is a bit more humid than up in the northern part of the state, but not unbearable. if you lived outside of dallas, you can expect similar weather. i guess another pretty big con is all the universities around there. especially with UT, getting around or doing things in Austin can be difficult depending on what is going on that weekend. but if you dont live right in town or downtown, it isnt that big of a problem. best of luck in making your decision!

Pflugerville has the greatest school District in the area. You have a 10 year old so I think that would be more important to you than the nite life scene. Round Rock is also a good choice. I have two children and make it just fine off my salary. Hell, you can make it off 10 dollars an hour here if you budget right. You’ll struggle but you will still make it.

PROS:
1. Great live music
2. Tasty food
3. Tons of places to go party (if you’re into that sort of thing)
4. Lots of activities for your son to get intoCONs:
1. OMG, the traffic sucks here!!!
2. Living expenses are high, a decent one bedroom apartment will run ya $ 600 + /mo
3. Austin Independent School District is a mess!On a scale from 1-10 I give Austin a 8.5!

weather is excellent but durring like july it is very hot and hummid so go swimming.ummm
if i wear u live like the suburbs or live in austin south austin. its like 15 minutes to downtown. just look on wikipedia and on other sources.
and the traffic is not that bad.
