Question : What is the purpose of Property Maintenance Codes?
For example I live in the state of Ny where they have property maintenance codes which are stupid. I don’t know if other states have them too.

There is a code saying that driveways, walkways, sidewalks, etc of your property must be free from hazardous conditions. Why is this a code when people have eyes to see what and where they are walking. This doesn’t make any sense to me. What is the purpose of this code anyway? Since when are people responsible for other not looking where they are going?

Someone told me that the reason for these codes is because the state knows that everyone can’t be aware of all conditions at all times, but who fault is that? Sure not the owner of the property.

The main reason is to protect property values of the neighboring properties. If you wanted to sell your house what do you think people would think if the house next door was falling down, had broken pavement. or was overgrown with weeds.
