I work in a retirement facility, some residents are Diabetic and my boyfriend is also……?
Question : I work in a retirement facility, some residents are Diabetic and my boyfriend is also……?
this one resident is Diabetic and drinks a glass of apple juice or 2 with dinner. He has not drank the juice last couple of days and has water. I want to add he is very overweight and always sits in a Scooter, his wife always gets on him to eat less sweets after dinner. I’ve talked to him about my bf and his eating habits and all. I don’t know what kind of medication the resident is on, but he is all of the sudden worried about his apple juice intake. I’ve worked there 2 years, and this couple knows me very well, I don’t want to him the wrong thing so I asked my bf. He said it depends on the medication. I’m working tomorrow and will see the resident, any advice???? Thank you
I would just like to add this……….I would never risk my job and tell this resident something I really know little about! I serve the residents food, we have a nurse there Mon-Fri. Thank you all for the advice and information.

if you are not a doctor, nurse , or dietician keep your mouth shut, you can be sued for giving wrong advice

There are two types of diabetes. Type I is childhood onset. Type II is adult onset diabetes. Child onset diabetes is as a result of the body’s inability to produce insulin. Type II is as a result of insulin resisitance by the tissues of the body. People with type I diabetes tend to be very thin, and people with type II diabetes tend to be obese. You need to know if your boyfriend is type one or type two.
If someone is type two they are usually taking Metformin or glucophage. These medications act as an escort for the insulin molecule to enter the cells of the body while holding the hand of thier buddy glucose. Without it the insulin molecules which are attached to glucose basically just keep banging at the door of the cell wall and no-one is answering.
As for your friend in the retirement facility, He NEEDS to know two numbers. His daily glucose level and more importantly, his Hemoglobin A1C level. The hemoglobin A1C level is like a report card of how well you have controlled your glucose level over the past 3 months. It should be between 4 and 6. If your friends level was above 6, that may be why he switched to water instead of juice.
Also type II diabetics can decrease the effects of their disease by losing wieght. The reason that they become resistant to insulin is that the cells and the insulin molecule are supposed to fit like a lock and key. Gluccose bound to insulin are the “key” and the body tissues are the “lock”. When a person is overweight, the “lock” located on fat cells of the body become distorted and the “key” no longer fits. When someone loses enough weight the tissues begin to return to normal.Hope I didn’t confuse you too much…Good luck.

Diabetics are encouraged to eat fruit and vegetables every day. Although, fruits have natural sugars in them, they are not concentrated. In other words, they are simple sugars and do not increase your blood glucose level very much. So tell him not to worry about drinking apple juice. But he does need to drink in moderation. from Jill,R.N.

Every diabetic’s needs depends on a lot of things. Meds, severity of the disease, etc. It is also very hard to lose weight when you are diabetic.
Do not give this man any advice, that is up to his doctor and you do not know what is best for him and may cause more harm than good. The best thing you can do is to recommend that they speak to the physician about the situation and their concerns.
