Will moving the Earth be a valid method in stopping global warming??
Question : Will moving the Earth be a valid method in stopping global warming??
Say we’re on the brink of a global meltdown and it is far too late to save the earth, will moving the earth off its original orbit away from the sun stop global warming? How can we go about this?

First, it’s a whole lot easier to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Here’s a practical and affordable plan worked out by hundreds of scientists and economists from all over the world.
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,481085,00.html
http://www.ipcc.ch/SPM040507.pdfIt won’t totally stop global warming, but it will reduce it to where we can deal with the remaining effects.
Second, the Earth will not be destroyed. Nor will we all die.
It won’t be a Hollywood style disaster. Gradually coastal areas will flood and agriculture will be damaged. But it will be very bad. Rich countries will cope, but it will take huge amounts of money. In poor countries many people will die of starvation, but not all of them.
Most scientists say, in 20-50 years. But we need to start right now to fix it, fixing it will take even longer than that.
Really good website for more information here:

In theory it might work, but millions of people would be displaced. We are probably a thousand years away from being able to do that from a technology standpoint. It would take significant warming to end life on earth. Again probably at least a thousand years away. We need to focus ideas on reducing global warming NOW!!! We dont need to worry about futuristic pie in the sky ideas.

I’d say that’s probably the most “invalid” method you could come up with…
Since Superman is a fictional character…
I think we ought to stick with the idea of reducing carbon emissions…
Since that’s the whole darn problem…
But your idea is not as “impossible” as Oprah Winfrey slimming down and staying that way…Sheesh! Every week she’s either gained 50 lbs or lost 50 lbs…maybe we could get HER to move the Earth to a more favorable orbital position…
Although I suspect just a slight nudge in either direction would probably spell doom for life on this Planet in general…

This is not a functional method. In order to “move the earth” we would need to find a way to apply a sufficient force. This is patently impossible with any technology we would expect to have in the nect several thousand years. Since the energy required is so massive, if we had the ability to generate that much energy, then we clearly have a vastly more advanced technology than at current. It seems likely that said technology could find simpler, easier solutions to fix global warming. For example, it would take much less total energy to travel to nearby ice asteroids or comets, wrangle them into orbit, and introduce them to the earth’s atmosphere, leading to cooling. Or something equally insane, but at least plausible.

hmmmm…I was watching this on the science channel yesterday!! I think that moving the earth off of it’s orbit will be dangerous because the moon and the sun revolves around the earth, so it’s a possibility of a collision which definitely isn’t good. If there was a way to move the earth away, we would have to move the moon too, since that’s what keeps the earth on it’s axis. I doubt there’s a way to do so, but it would be a great imagination.

It would be far simpler and easier to adjust the saline composition of the oceans in order to change or redirect its currents… the currents of the ocean greatly determine the warmth of the planet.
Other than that, a lot of recent advancement has been made in engineering plants to be able to clean up toxins in the water, on the ground, and in the air. It would make sense that bio-engineered trees and plants could have a great impact on being able to control long-term global temperatures.

It’s not too late to save the Earth, if the people who run the world would just get their heads on straight and realize that global warming is not a scam. But as for your question, at the moment we don’t possess the capability to move the Earth any significant distance, and if we could it is possible that it would have disastrous effects on mankind.
