I am moving across the country with some friends. We have one car and are thinking about renting a moving truck so we don’t have to buy that much furniture when we get out there. There will be four of us to split the cost of the truck. How much gas will we use if we rent a 15′ truck? Which company is the best to rent from? Anyone that has made the cross country trip in a moving truck, is the lack of comfort and price worth not having to buy new furniture?

For goodness sake, go with PENSKE. They will have your truck available when you need it, and they are best at keeping their trucks in good working order. I used to get Uhaul – they SUCK. They never had trucks available, even when I had pre-reserved them, and when I could get a truck, it was usually dumpy with bad steering and no heat. Penske will probably cost more, but considering the long distance you’ll be traveling, it’s worth the cost. Take a look around next time you’re on the highway – all the moving trucks broken down on the side of the road are Uhauls. If you see a Penske, it’s there to tow the Uhaul away.
Oh, let me add: If you’re getting a truck, it might be worth it just to take your furniture with you. New furniture would cost more than packing and moving what you have. Come to think of it, it would probably even be cheaper than buying used stuff.
