Question : Relocating from Virginia to Sacramento area – Most affordable way??
I called PODs (we’ve used them before for a shorter move and liked them) They quoted us over $ 9,000 for two pods enough for our entire house. That doesn’t include our cars expenses?!?!? Unfortunately the new job isn’t paying for relocation… 
Are Movers or a Uhaul much more? Any recommendations on a reliable but affordable company? Yeah right, huh? Thank You!!

I’m thinking that it would be quite a bit cheaper to do it yourself by renting a truck (Uhaul, Budget, etc.). I know when we rented a truck (Budget) for 2 days we paid approx. $ 110/day for the largest truck they had (we printed off a coupon from online). My cousin just recently moved to Sacramento (from San Diego) and paid $ 200 for a large truck and then another $ 100 for a trailer to tow the car. They also had the truck for 2 days. You’re obviously going to need it for longer, but I can’t image it costing anything close to $ 9000.
If you don’t want to do it yourself, your best bet is to call around and ask if they are having any promotional deals.

Sell most of it, the stuff you don’t really want or need…keep the rest in a uhaul or whatever, then purchase your new items after you move here on ebay or a wholesale discounter. Honestly, wouldn’t you rather spend that $ 9k on new stuff than to ship old stuff? Move somewhere other than Sac if you can! Lived there done that, horrible…, but then again coming from Virginia you may not notice the difference. But, honestly Sac is a big hole! If you have to move there be sure to shop around first to find a good neighborhood…it will be worth it! Stay away from the city, rancho cordova, south of the city, west of the city and pretty much anywhere near to the city! Folsom and El Dorado Hills are nice areas as are some other suburbs, but the commute is horrible during rush hour. I wish I could help more, best of luck to you.

I moved to the Sac Area from Buffalo, NY about a year ago and I rented a truck from Penske. They had the best ride comfort wise, but were a little more expensive. Your best bet is to pay for a truck and move yourself. Its much, much cheaper. You can always rent a trailer to bring one of your cars on and drive the other one. It will slow you up a bit but paying for 8 tanks of gas is a lot cheaper then paying $ 1000 to have it shipped here. One big thing is get a AAA membership. You can usually get a 10% discount on moving supplies and truck rentals form the moving companies. I know at Penske you get a 10% discount.

When we were moved by Hubby’s company, it cost nearly $ 10,000 just to move from Southern California to Northern California. We moved the contents of a four bedroom house. The rates are pretty much determined by the government, so there isn’t much leaway.
I would suggest you simply call around and explain that your company won’t pay, maybe they can offer you an “out of pocket” discount.

We just made a 2,000 mile move, and did tons of research to do it. PODS was one of the most expensive. Though UHaul was cheaper, it was still very expensive. What we learned from family and friends who have done this, is that the best thing to do is to sell as much as you possibly can, and bring only photos and important papers with you. We did a little of both and it was still too expensive.
Have a moving sale and sell everything, it will cost SO much to drive (add in gas, food, exhaustion, tires, insurance, broken things, etc.) and replacing furniture can be done in thrift stores and yard sales until you can afford new furniture.
