Okay…i moved from boston to los angeles and finding it really difficult to meet people?
Question : Okay…i moved from boston to los angeles and finding it really difficult to meet people?
i do property management and there is no like provided social life I almost work for myself.
it seems to me that people here in LA are not as real and open on the impersonal social level-it seems the default attitude is cocky.
i’m a triathlete too and pianist very confident.
any tips or anecdotes would be great.

It always boggles my mind that people come here to LA and expect it to be just like what they are used to, except with sunny skies and babes and hunks in bathing suits.
Sorry, but when you move here, you’re going to have to adjust to the reality that is LA. One thing about living in LA is that everybody does their own thing… there’s a casual indifference about the people who live here. That means you can be yourself, whatever that may be, but don’t expect a homey, communitiy atmosphere like in other parts of the country. You can’t have it both ways: If you want people to care, be prepared for people to always be “in your business”. If you want the tolerance that LA is known fore, you’re going to have to deal with the casual indifference. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is here.
That “cockiness” is actually just a casual indifference. So is the “not as real and open” attitude. It’s the same indifference that allows people of all cultures to coexist here. If you want “real and open”, you’ll have to deal with the people “in your business” and the judgementalism that comes with it.
Getting to know people is a bit harder here. But with a smile and perserverence, it can be done.
BTW, are you always putting down the local sports teams? That’s a HUGE turnoff here. Feel free to root for the BoSox and Celtics, but if you’re putting down the Dodgers and Lakers, people here will turn oof to like a light switch. Just a hint if you want to make friends here. I’ve met too many people from Boston who come here and do nothing but complain.

Take a class somewhere–depending on where you are staying there should be plenty of classes being offered at a community center, library, or community college. You seem to have many interests and if you put them to use I’m sure that you would meet plenty of people. Many people in L.A. seem cocky and self absorbed–but we’re not, it’s just the way we carry ourselves to get through hot traffic infested days….There are also dancing classes where you will meet PLENTY of people. Remember that in such a large city there are way too many creepy people, so Angelenos are usually on the defense….
Other suggestions:
-take up surfing–you’ll find plenty of friends around the Malibu area
-join some sort of church (there’s even churches for atheists around here if that’s your flavor)
-volunteer
-join a club that fits your interests

Hmm, I find Boston people kind of cold when we go back there for my dh’s reunions. Not enough smiling for my taste. (LOL, sorry.) There are a lot of not-so-genuine people in LA, but there are lots of good people, too. = )
Do you belong to a triathlete club? My sister met her husband and a lot of other friends by joining something like that, either triathlete or cycling club. Try googling around for a cycling or triathlete club.
