As a builder specializing in Timber Frame construction, I was looking for a book that would provide pictures and design ideas for someone considering this type of construction. This book isn’t it. The book is full of nice pictures of downright ugly timber frames. Many of the frames seem to be made of 4×4′s. That’s not a structural frame, that’s trim. Real frames start at double or triple that size.Timber frames are beautiful structures conveying the strength and richness of the trees from which they came. There are a few examples of this in this book, but not nearly enough to make it worth the cost. If you are looking for a great timber frame idea book, keep looking.

I had checked this book out from the library and found myself renewing it sooooo many times… So I had to buy it! My husband and I are going to build a house soon, and I wanted to get a few ideas – this book really helped! Open beam styles are mostly what it depicts, from 2,500 sq/ft to over 4,000 sq feet. If you are a home builder, and looking for new and unique ideas, get this book. There are simple ‘blue-prints’ in the back. If you are wanting to build a country style, beautful open floor plans, get this book. If you just enjoy architecture and gorgeous pictures and dreaming about having a barn style home, get this book!
