You passed the Credit Card Act that was suppose to protect consumers from the Big Bad Banks. The interest rates on my credit cards doubled after the Act was passed. Now, I have been informed that I will no longer have free checking and I am going to be charged for every single transaction I make with any of my accounts. If this is your way of helping, then, STOP!!! I can’t afford any of your help! Financial institutions will always get around Congress and the little guys end up paying the bills.

Want to protect the consumer???? Lower taxes!!! Decrease that burden and we would be much better off. The Middle Class pays too much in federal income taxes right now, and it’s time to start taking a look at why we should pay out a car payments worth of money each month to the feds every month. It’s our money, let us keep more of it Mr. Biden!

@libanadam The CreditCard Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 is a federal law passed by the United States Congress and signed by Obama on May 22/09.The CC Act went into effect on Feb 2, 2010.Congress debated on both Floors that if this was passed that the banks would probably increase their rates before the effective date-but they passed into Law anyway and rates increased. In Dec. Congress even tried to move up the effective date in order to stop the increases. They failed.

@nothingnessx2, Elizabeth Warren said it best in her seminal article. When a toaster malfunctions due to it being a bad product, you don’t tell the buyer that they don’t need a toaster anyway and it is their fault the toaster broke. What you do is make it the responsibility of the toaster manufacturer to put out better product.

I agree with what VP Biden has to say in the first half of this speech. In my experience as a 1) federal prosecutor, 2) SEC trial attorney, and 3) representing large numbers of consumers in class actions, I have seen firsthand some of the tragic stories that occur when consumer protection laws and enforcement fail to go far enough. In my blog, “The Corporate Observer,” I extrapolate on my views regarding the legal side of consumer protection — an issue that becomes more important every day.
