Will the invasion of Mexico by wealthy American’s change the political landscape in Mexico?
Question : Will the invasion of Mexico by wealthy American’s change the political landscape in Mexico?
Nearly 2 million American citizens now own property in Mexico and the number is increasing everyday. Beach front homes and retirement Villas dot the Mexican landscape on both coasts.
Anyone who must deal with Mexican bureaucracy will tell you Mexico’s systems, including those of the private sector, are in fact screwed up. Once you have a phone or bank account in Mexico you begin to understand how “screwed up” things are. Mexico’s political history of a pork barrel, patronage style, single party rule, has promulgated a system that is three times more cumbersome than the U.S. system of managing a nation’s bureaucracy.
Will it change?

Is this a question, or a lecture?
Of course it will—while we flatter ourselves that things remain the same, they are changing under our very eyes from year to year, from day to day.
Young and middle-aged Americans, spurred by nostalgic memories of Mexican vacations in high school and college, are moving to Mexico, joining with U.S. retirees and changing Mexican cultural and economic life. (Pacific News Service)
“A generation ago, older Americans would move to San Miguel, or Lake Chapala, or Mexico City,” says Joann Andrews, who has lived in Merida, a large city on the Yucatan peninsula, since the 1950s. “But now, there are Americans setting down roots throughout the entire country. Beach front homes are a main target. And are vastly becoming all American owned. For decades, most Americans living in Mexico were retirees. But something of greater consequence than American-style retirement communities is taking shape. Mexico is confronting the cultural and socioeconomic impact of “Generation Gringo”: young, working-age American migrants who are starting families.
Hundreds of thousands of American youth have been descending on Cancun since the mid-1990s.
Treasury Department officials in Washington estimate that the number of Treasury checks — Social Security, Veteran Administrations, tax refunds — sent to Mexico is “in the ballpark of 750,000.” Add this younger group joining in and you see Mexico is changing. Even some of their laws have been bending now more to cater to the new immigrants from America.
Many Mexicans are ambivalent about the new invasion. “The last time Mexico experienced anything like this, it was a prelude to war,” Jorge Canto, a businessman who works with Americans said. “Is history repeating itself?” Mexican officials worry that older American immigrants will strain Mexico’s health system. Because of the influx, Medicaid and Medicare have expanded their payment programs in Mexico, and some U.S. HMOs cover members living in Mexico. And their Medical is allowing this too. (One change right there!!!!)
There is more on the web. Yes Mexico is being invaded by wealthy Americans and now by young Americans..and changes are happening.
All I have to say is- Move Over Mexico for-’Generation Gringo’ it is coming-like it or not.
