Question : Electrical issue. A home inspection reported that a house is reccomended as having an upgrade to 100 amps…?
It says that it has 60 amp service and 100 amp main. I’m confused. What all would it take to correct this problem and about how much would it cost? Thanks!
I have called electricians and they all charge for an estimate! I couldlnt believe it- I was hoping for a quick ballpark answer over the phone. Any ideas on cost would be greatly appreciated!

as far as the cost goes call an electrical contractor and get an estimate. the house currently has the ability to protect 60 amps of current, pretty small for some of todays modern equipment. the inspector would like to see a 100 amp entrance put in so there is no problem down the road as far as tripping breakers or blowing fuses. (i would never put in anything less than 200A myself)

In the Massachusetts, Rhode Island area it will probably cost you anywhere from $ 800 {family friend}-$ 1800. You can find an electrician to probably do it as low as $ 1000.
The power company will have to install larger wires from the telephone pole to your house.
Then an electrician will have to change your service {Where you meter is on the house up to where the wires from the pole attach to your house} , And they will have to change you electrical panel {fuse panel, circuit breaker panel}
Best of luck on finding an electrian with a low price., I would also ask the difference in price between a 100 amp, 150 amp, and 200 amp service. It may only be a difference of a few hundred bucks and will be well worth if / when you go to sell your house.

This does not in any way mean your power cable that is furnished by the light company is small. Not at all, those cables even in the 1920′s were capable of 100 amp service to a house.
The modern home requires more electric service due to increase in electricity IE TV , microwave, stove, ETC.
So the inspector figured 60amp is inadequate and it is.However, dont miss the point here. A simple thing like installing a 100 amp box and removing the 60 amp box is not the issue here. In this house the whole house needs rewireing. The house is probably old romex that is shot, there are not enough outlets anywhere and what wireing there is old, detoriated and plain junk.
This is a major rework, in fact its an entire house rewire job to upgrade to 100 amp. Sure anyone can put that higher 100 amp box in but the rest of the wiring is outdated worn out junk.
Dont be fooled by the simple cost of a 100 amp replacement box, This is at least a $ 3,000 or more job. And patching the holes to pull new wire, ive not even mentioned that and that is what will happen in a rewire of an old house.

The house has 60 amp service meaning it is very old, has fuses, and should be upgraded to minimum of 100 amp service. At the time the house was built, electric was only for lights, a fridge, and maybe a furnace. Now, electric is consumed for many more appliances, so an upgrade is required. Some banks will not finance such old service, especially FHA loans.
What it means to you… New, heavier wire will be brought to the house from the pole.. A new panel (CIrcuit breakers) will have to be installed, and all your wiring going from you old fuse box will have to be re-routed to the new panel. Legally, the electric company will not run the wire from the pole to the house without you or your electrical contractor providing a permit for this upgrade. The utility company will run the new wire to the house, replace the old meter, and install a new meter. You (your electrician) will have to do all the wiring in the new panel… Chicago area would be about $ 1200-1500 dollars. Maybe more…????Personal advantage… You probably only have 2-4 circuits at this time. No room to provide more circuits or heavier service….Air conditioning, electric heater, washer dryer…Deep freezer, not to mention runninng any tools in a shop…or putting an additon on requiring more circuits. If you are trying to do this now, you are probably continually replacing fuses…which adds to the risk of electrical fire…

This is not good. Unsafe.
60 amp service means the large service cable from the power company to your main breaker panel can carry only 60 amps.
The breaker panel installed in the home will allow 100 amps to flow to it/through it. This can cause a fire IF 100 amps of breakers are installed and used at maximum power all at once. (Not much chance of this, but not safe)
To correct, a 100 amp service cable or 200 amp service cable must be pulled from the power pole to the electrical breaker panel. Cost depends mostly on the length of cable needed. - Comment Feed for this Post
your electrical draw is more than your house can safely handle.
consider an upgrade to 200 amp service. 750 -1000 for a good friend, to 2 grand for a greed monger electrician.
you would also need to separate some receptacles and lights to divvy up the load.
