I was born in 1921 in downtown St. Louis, Missouri in the middle of the good old USA

I want to tell the story of two men of a certain small town in Missouri. One afternoon in late spring fair in 1891 two men graduated from the same university.

They were very similar, the two young men. Both were better than average students, both were personable and well liked. As graduates tend to be. They were filled with ambitious dreams for the future.

And on this day end with college degrees in hand, these young men from St Louis University to share their mark in the world. Some 30 years later they met at the inauguration of a new building. It was a special moment because one of the men designed and built this magnificent building is a very important customer.

They were very similar. Both were happily married. Both had three children. And both had gone to work as an architect.

But it was a famous architect with projects in Chicago, New York, and Missouri State Capital. The others were still drawing. The difference between the two men was no difference of capacity but a difference in the decision.

What made the difference

A man trained even the best architect he could and leave a legacy through his work. His dream was to buildings that relate to construct the test of time. The other was just happy to bring his work to paper.
