Do you think that a guardian breed owner should receive a discount on homeowner’s insurance….?
Question : Do you think that a guardian breed owner should receive a discount on homeowner’s insurance….?
instead of paying MORE, or worse, being declined altogether?
Im thinking of those who own shepherds, english mastiffs, Cane corso, presas, akita, chow…
Say they can produce a “Canine Good Citizenship” certificate to the insurance agency… or a training certificate from some sort of reputable organization…. should they receive a discount like one does if one has an alarm system installed in one’s home?

no. part of homeowner’s insurance is covering you if your animal hurts a visitor…. you have more risk to others in your home, not less with ANY animal present.
They’re worth it anyway, but no, they shouldn’t get you a discount.

I think that any dog irregardless of breed that proves to be a good companion and safe dog should not be charged the regular rate. Many of the breed that you mention are not covered because of the real and perceived aggression issues. I have always felt that properly trained dogs were less reactive and better socialized than those that just languish in the backyard all day. I feel that a CGC is a good place to start but is does not necessarily prove that the dog is reliable around people or in the owner’s yard. Home owner’s insurance also covers people who come onto the property legally should they get injuried. So the dogs really need to be tested as to how they react when a stranger legally approaches the home and/or enters the yard. Some of these people would include the mailman, delivery people, and children selling things.

I think there is a catch 22. Dogs are a liability, period.
Most likely a guardian breeds will be on the big list of bad dogs. Thus, posing more of a liability than a small Chi.
If the dog is a trained protection dog the liability goes up. A fully trained protection dog poses less of a problem than a non trained dog but the insurance companies don’t see it that way.
I have 3 large “fence trained” dogs but I was never ask about owning dogs. State Farm.
My insurance company never ask about dogs when I signed up for it. State Farm.

Any dog that can bark is an alarm system.
A rottie and a chihuahua can both bark and alert their owners to a problem.
So no….owning a dog – any dog – does not, should not and will not get you a discount.
The main difference between a dog and an alarm system……alarm systems don’t bite. And you only get a discount for a monitored alarm system. The dog can’t call the police and fire department the way an alarm company can.
However, having a large dog that is a CGC – decreases the chances your dog bites someone and you get sued as a result.

Generally no because too many idiots own these breeds of dogs and let them run rampant and hurt people.
No one’s alarm system ever killed anyone either.
I wouldn’t want someone to get a discount on homeowner’s for owning a GSD or other blacklisted breed because that will encourage people to get dogs that are less than suitable.
And any dog is a liability.

I dont get a discount (that would be nice) but my insurance company was going to drop us because we have pit bulls but they agreed to keep us since I was able to have my oldest recieve his CGC and had him temeperment tested through the ATTS and plan on doing so with my puppy when she is old enough. They said that was responsible on my part and was sufficient to keep my insurance.

Nope – certificates can be faked. Poor trainers can issue them as well, and dogs with this training (CGC or schutzhund) can STILL have behavioral issues related to “guard dog training.”
Also the case of idiot owners going through it and STILL using the dog inappropriately.
Dogs can ALWAYS act out and injure a person – a security system could not.
