Mold test kit tests positive in my rental home…What is my next step with the landlords?
Question : Mold test kit tests positive in my rental home…What is my next step with the landlords?
I am in Knoxville, TN. Myself, husband and 3 children have lived in a rental home for 9 months with a musty odor. I purchased a mold test kit and it grew mold from an air sample. Do my landlords have to get a professional evaluation to see what type of mold and if its toxic? Is there a time line for this and what rights do I have?

It’s certainly grounds to break a lease and move, and you should get the heck out of there asap before someone gets sick.
If no one has gotten sick yet, there’s not much you can do about it legally, but you should notify your landlord and probably file a report with code enforcement.
Inform your landlord as soon as possible. Make known to him the problem and the unbearable musty odors. Tell him that you need to break the lease and vacant the unit to avoid any sickness due to mold allergies. Next consult with your local health department for further advice. You need to act fast, don’t take mold issue lightly. Mold can kill.
